  • China tariff war worries and more: What to expect from Apple's Q2 2025 earnings

MSFT just edged past AAPL in terms of market cap. Cook took the helm at the #1 company but will it stay that way? The mix of failed/late/obscure projects, lack of new blockbusters, and legal battles doesn't make Apple an obvious #1. It should be. I do hope the next CEO will have a product mindset and be less of a tax collector.

  • Apple supplier Pegatron says tariffs will mean third world-style shortages for US

They are called reciprocal because when one country applies a tariff to another, in almost all cases, that other country will apply the same tariff.
They are not. It is a calculation based on deficit of physical goods excluding services. Disney, McDonald's, Microsoft, Salesforce,... a big ZERO to Trump. So... EU is hit by a 20-25% tariff for a 3% trade deficit and tariffs being 10% or mostly 0%.

Lesotho is hit by 50% - a country doing 98.9% less per capita than the US is tariffed to death due to Levi's and their $3/day salaries. For the US to be a country so hungry for $3/day jobs that Africans must die for it?!

I miss the country of "The Hill We Climb".

  • Apple shifts robotics team away from Giannandrea's AI organization to prioritize hardware

The only apparent area of roadmaps following their course in relative calm is in the chip design unit and while there has been upheaval there, it has been in the completely normal range.
The team doing photo + video seems to be doing fine. They utilized ML as the only part of Apple and keep pushing boundaries without faking it like Samsung.
The security and privacy teams deliver. The AirPods/AirPods Pro/iPad Pro (hardware)/MBA teams are also delivering.

Obviously some teams are not doing well. The Mac "Schrödinger" Pro has been dead (or alive) for 15 years. Reissuing HomePod and AirPods Max with fewer features or old components. And even the MBP where the team has been asleep since 2021 while Dell is capable of delivering Tandem OLED in laptops.

Apple is indeed doing too many products while not getting enough from R&D investments.

  • US will not tolerate EU fine against Apple, says White House

    alandail said:
Absolutely absurd that the EU imposes fines based on global revenue, not EU revenue. EU has no jurisdiction on business done in other countries.
The US is doing exactly the same. A European bank doing a bank transfer in Europe can get fined if the currency is USD unless the bank follow US regulations. Doesn't have to be cash and the transfer can be in Europe only. A bank in Denmark got fined $2 billion by DOJ for doing so without ever operating in the US. Seems DOJ is happy to hold jurisdiction outside US. It is OK to call it absurd and I tend to agree.

The European Union is making a mistake by not attempting to establish an environment conducive to company growth, akin to the early Silicon Valley. This region boasts nearby schools, research labs, infrastructure, and a relatively open society in California, which contribute to its success.
EU has actively supported 30 industrial clusters since 2021: https://www.clustercollaboration.eu/euroclusters
Just returned this week from Toulouse, France - home of the European Aerospace and Defence cluster. The city is filled with schools, research, Airbus, and infrastructure.
Venture capital is also moving in. Same for renewable energy: https://www.elbealliance.eu/key-figures
