'Fortnite' antisteering mandate punishment 'fundamentally unfair' says Apple
Marvin said:Apple has a right to charge a commission for directing over 100 million players to an app. Even if 30% of all transactions is too high, it shouldn't be 0%.
Even worse... Apple is seen as holding a monopoly on smartphones (feel free to argue, but that is how things stand). Trying to get a share of software sales or making secret APIs to benefit sales of headphones are not OK when you hold a monopoly. -
'Fortnite' antisteering mandate punishment 'fundamentally unfair' says Apple
wonkothesane said:I think both of you have a point. In a free market,..
There is none. In a free market there would be radiation from headsets, antitrust would be acceptable, and asbestos in baby powder... those parents should have shopped something else. Free markets don't come with regulations like patents or tariffs or consumer protection of any kind.
Apple will have to adjust to the real world. Preferably before more executives commit perjury. -
Car makers reject CarPlay Ultra as an Apple overreach
mikethemartian said:sflagel said:it is ludicrous for a car manufacturer to give Apple access to all its car systems, which will invariably lead to Apple becoming the gatekeeper to the entire tech stack of a car. This in addition to the branding impact. CarPlay is not the end of evolution, for example, the music app is well on CarPlay. Audi music controls are much better. -
Apple's 'F1' ad in Wallet won't hurt you, but it might save you $10

Five years of Apple Silicon: How Apple continues to revolutionize chips
StrangeDays said:nubus said:Did the change make increase the marketshare for the Mac? All the "it is fast" and "it uses less energy" are nice but did it really change anything?
Do we even know that Apple Silicon improved profits? Intel Lunar Lake is using a similar on-chip RAM but Intel rejected it from future chips due to impact on margins.
