  • Intel-based iMac refresh will launch in the next week, leakers claim

    Backstory:
I also have an iMac from 2009.  Just home use.  Int, E-mail, and Photos (66,000 and counting!).
I've put SSDs in two old iMacs (20" iMacs from 2008), and an A1283 Mac Mini.  All boot in 22 seconds now, and run great, but are stuck at El Cap.
I've been too scared to risk our primary home machine on El Cap for fear of breaking it, then we'll need a new/used 27" !.
We just soldier on.  Really need to open it up through and blow the dust out.  I suspect it's really bad in there.

    Side comment:
In the US, the RAM pickup truck is "all-new", but RAM continues to make and sell the previous generation alongside the new generation.  Plenty of people in the market for a really good truck that does it's job well, without all the latest electronics.  So one saves good cash for a very good truck.

    Comment:
If Apple sold what today is a $2500 iMac for $1500 with Intel's latest/final silicon, it would be a no-brainer to get the last Intel for a great price.
But isn't part of the problem that Intel is too $$$?  So do we expect ASi to be better AND cheaper?  Or at least way-better, and similar $$$?
So my only personal reservation is that the last Intel won't come with a big discount, and will remain full price.
Sine a lot of us keep our iMacs for YEARs, it will appear old in a hurry after way-better comes out.

  • iMac with 'iPad Pro design language' plus T2 chip could debut at WWDC

I purchased a 27" iMac the day after they came out in Nov 2009.

I didn't know that huge screen was coming and I joke that I almost fainted when it debuted....

It was fairly upgraded, with a 2TB HDD (7200rpm), at $2600.

It's still going and we still use it.  It's on El Capitan and we only use it for family photos in the Photo's app (66,000 of them), and e-mail/Internet.

My replacement goal has always been 2TB SSD, without the SSD-upgrade being $1400.  So far it's been very very high-cost to get there.

Today only the high end $2300 one can be upgraded to 2TB SSD from 2TB Fusion, and it's $700.  So $3000 total to get to 2TB SSD.  Maybe that's very fair, not complaining, but it is steep.

Will be watching with great interest on what the new form factor looks like, but even more what it takes to get to 2TB SSD.

    Cheers!

  • How to revive an iPod with a hard drive using flash storage

I had a 160GB Classic in Silver, with stainless steel back.  $399 I think.  I wasn't even a music guy, but lost my mind and HAD TO HAVE IT when it came out.

I sealed it up in a silicone-and-then-clear-plastic case and it was totally flawless at all times.

I ended up putting ripped/owned DVD movies on it (and my pitiful 6GB of music).  It blew my mind that so many dozens of movies could be on it.

YEARS later, long into the iPhone era when I was no longer using it, I sold it for $150.  Couldn't believe it held almost half it's value so many years after.

    What a product.

I really like the spirit of this piece:  Reviving/using old Apple stuff.

I'm typing this on a 2009 Mac Mini (the white-plastic-top kind), that I recently bought on Craigslist for $40.
    I put a $26 120GB SSD in it using ifixit's directions, added 4GB of DDR3-1067 RAM from my desk-drawer-of-chips ($0).
It boots in 20-seconds, runs El Cap, and drives a modern-enough 1920x1080 screen.
I geek out about how UNTHINKABLE such "capability" would have been in late 2009....
What's not to love Love LOVE!?!?!?"
Oh and my 11-year old put a Willy Wonka DVD in and watched it in the home-office through the Mini, just because it works.  Magic indeed.

    Cheers!

  • Save thousands on 2019 Mac Pro RAM with DIY upgrade

Heh heh.  Just for laughs.  Not a serious play on what really works and what doesn't.  Have a good weekend all.

  • Apple's new 16-inch MacBook Pro is built to blaze through pro workflows

I work for a large company in a new building.  Conference rooms all have big TVs.

In every table are retractable HDMI/Ethernet cords.

Also just sitting on every table are little keychains with 3 adapters:

1 is iPhone to HDMI (plus a USB-C-looking shape on the output side [not sure if this can be an input; doubt it]).
The other two I might not know the names:
Mini-DisplayPort?  The one that fits my 2009 MacBook:  Really small fat-rectangle, with two tiny corner-cuts.
Display Port?  The one that looks like HDMI at first glance, but has a significant corner-cut on only one side.

Oops, I see the coming-reaction here.  "None are USB-C shape to HDMI".  That's true actually.

    YMMV.
