  • Apple spends $150M a year on United flights, Shanghai is No. 1 destination

I feel sorry for all of those Apple Employees who have to fly United. That would be the absolute LAST airline I'd ever consider flying on. I cannot stand United.

Totally!  They are the WORST airline.  I remember flying them a lot several decades ago and it was quite the opposite.  Back then the employees were friendly and the planes weren't ridiculously cramped.  I've had the misfortune of flying them a few times in the past ten years or so and they are just awful now.  Some of the rudest, nastiest employees I've ever dealt with and the most uncomfortable planes.  I'd rather flying standing than have to sit in those seats.

$150M also seems like a pretty absurd amount to spend on air travel annually.  I'm having a hard time imagining why any company would need to spend that kind of money on air travel, especially these days with high speed internet, video conferencing and online collaboration tools.  I understand that some things have to be handled in person, but at an average price of $2000/ticket, that's still 75,000 trips or 200+ employee flights per day.  Doesn't that seem crazy?
This is how business works-- one of the largest companies in the world, with factories, suppliers and research centers all over the world, does the vast majority of business communications on line, but still requires significant and constant in person meetings, inspections, etc.

A truly heartwarming story, and sadly one of the few things SIRI can do correctly.
You are just a hater. I just bought a home pod and I was expecting to hate siri based on what people like you say, but she is even more awesome than on the iPhone. First, she understands me incredibly well, from quite a distant further than my iPhone, and she can do quite a bit. Set a timer, make a phone call, tell me just about everything about famous people, countries, companies, etc. She can tell me what is playing at the movies, where the closet pizza place is, what the best pizza place is based on reviews, etc. Honestly, I find new things everyday she can do.Tell me about my day, jokes, the weather, the list goes on and on.

It's one of those Internet myths that folks care about the 70K "skills" Alexa can do.  Yes, people have written various "skills" such as different fart sounds, but EVERY survey shows that Siri on Homepod can already do what the vast majority of people want their smart speakers to do, e.g., make calls, check on traffic, check on calendar, play music, set timers, read messages, control lights, etc. Of course, Siri does it without compromising your privacy and without having to listen to music or podcast with a tinny sounding throwaway speaker.

    "Thank you, Siri."

"I can search for 'Thank you, Siri' on your iPhone."
Huh? You must not have read the article.  It was about Siri hearing the victim and doing exactly what was needed?  I think you must be confusing this with a Macrumors thread you're on.

Remember they were going super nuclear on android, well that worked out well for them, they lost that war. .
I guess if you consider getting 90 to 100% of the ENTIRE industry's profits "losing," you're spot on. LOL.

  • No, Apple's licensing of iTunes & AirPlay 2 isn't a 'strategy reversal' in any way

Anyone who thinks this isn’t a significant shift in strategy is blind. And stop bringing up iPod. The Mac in the early 2000s was nothing like iOS is today. The only way Apple was going to grow iPod (and iTunes) sales was via Windows. That is absolutely not the case today. Of course if Apple is building something to compete with Netflix/Amazon/HBO then yeah that services needs to be everywhere. But that is a strategy shift.

The latest episode of Ben Thompson’s excellent podcast explains it well.

    https://exponent.fm/episode-158-a-significant-shift/

If DED thinks this is the right strategy then that’s what he should be arguing and providing reasons why he thinks it’s the right business move.

Ben Thompson is often wrong.  His problem is he looks at the present and then mistakenly believes that there are always a small number of variables that controlled an outcome that he is uniquely able to divine, and then he makes a broad prediction, when in reality there are so many variables that control an outcome. For example, just a short while back he scoffed at Apple ever being a major player with services, saying they were terrible at it and could never compete with Google that was so far ahead.  In reality, Apple was already a major player in Services (the App Store anyone?) and Apple's services will soon hit $50 Billion in revenue.  In the issue at hand, he wrote his article too soon, as more news came out, it turns out that Samsung and others actually experienced greater declines because of China.
