Apple wants iPhone to be proof of identity and replace passports
Airlines already can not even do a boarding pass with consistency.. Within the same airline, it depends on the airport to have the compatible hardware/software. It would only take an inoperative device at one of the six border crossings on your trip to require you to carry your passport anyway.

To make this work Apple doesn't need to get more banks on board. It is the still amazing number of POS venders who do not have the system working. A million free devices to the mom & pops would further Apple's biz more than signing 100 more banks.

In our end of the valley we get episodic power outages. Absent a $6500 Tesla Powerwall , that leaves a window of vulnerability which I have managed with battery-operated Nests and an UPS for the WiFi set up. It does not appear this device has that option. -

patchythepirate is exactly right. Maybe if Apple spent less time roping in yet another bank, but rather just bouht, say , a million POS devices for the small biz folks out there. Apple Pay works just about perfect- but the number of places for its use does not seem bigger than a year ago.
