  • iPhone 15 has new battery health controls to prevent charging past 80%

I wonder why they don’t give you the ability to do this with pre-15 phones. Seems like a simple software thing that wouldn’t be hardware dependent.

  • iOS 17 now available with StandBy, NameDrop, and interactive widgets

I have two issues that I’m experiencing with my new iOS 17 install (on an iPhone 12 Pro Max). Curious if anyone else has run across these issues and found a fix?

    1. Apple Maps isn’t letting rotate and zoom in when I’m navigating to a location. Actually, to be more precise, sometimes it’s letting me and sometimes it isn’t. This is particularly frustrating when I’m getting to head out and am trying to reorient the map so that I can figure out which street it’s asking me to go down.

    2. There should be a new People, Pets, & Places smart album option where you can tag your pets on the Photos app. I’m still seeing the old People & Places album. When I scroll down to the bottom of this album the Add People button is greyed out with a message saying “Lock your phone and connect it to power to complete”. Locking my phone and connecting it to power doesn’t seem to do anything.

Can’t wait for Phantom Liberty either. Did you see they are having the Night City Wire Event tomorrow?
Tomorrow has a bunch of goodies. Got a Night City Wire sandwiched between a Nintendo Direct and a Sony State of Play. I don't expect a lot from the State of Play (third-party and indie focused), but the Nintendo Direct is supposed to have one banger.

BG3 is easily GOTY, so it's really cool to finally see it come to Mac after the delay (which all things considered wasn't too terrible.)
Thursday should be a fun day. Personally, I’m hoping that banger is a new F-Zero.

I can’t wait to play BG3 once I clear through some of my backlog. I was going to get it on the PS5, but now I think I’ll get the Mac version instead.
ooh, didn’t even think of F-Zero! I’d love to play a new modernized version of the game!!!! I’d also love to see Nintendo update the Switch with better specs. It’s been over 6 years since its initial release with the only update being an OLED screen. It’s getting a bit long in the tooth. I’m not expecting a new Switch to be announced this year, but I really hope they come out with something better early next year.

  • Apple gives in on the End Call button position in latest iOS 17 beta

Yeah welp people at Apple need to justify their jobs and when you hit version 17 of a piece of software these are the kinds of things done to show progress.
Politicians, middle managers, long running software (developers).  Everyone needs to justify their existence.  I find it irritating that things are constantly changing for no real UX reason.   Sometimes I think it is that changes are not thought through.

MacOS (this may go back to OS9?) would not remove focus from an app automatically unless the system health required it.  Ie a system level issue that would damage the system or your data had happened and immediate attention was required.   Any other time a way was provided to notify the user of a change that needed attention.  Now any app can instigate system actions that grab focus.   Terrible experience.  I am typing in a window and all of a sudden so non essential service finished and grabs focus with some non essential dialog.

The red button, the thing I describe above , are all symptoms of the “make changes and don’t think them through and justify them” syndrome.
Yup, agreed 100%! There’s no reason to move the end call button and it’s a bad UX move. Also agree on the issue of apps grabbing focus. The way it’s now handled is so counterproductive and disrupts my work on a regular basis.

  • Encrypted iMessage chats lead to record-breaking SEC fines for Wells Fargo, Wall Street

Financial expert Clark Howard refers to Wells Fargo as "a criminal enterprise impersonating a bank." And still after how many years and how much in fines does WF continue its nefarious ways??
As long as money makes the laws in this country they’ll continue getting away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist sadly.
