  • Apple 'cracking down' on non-work Slack channels over staff remote work debate [u]

Seems like the employees have had a taste of what it is like to add a bit of balance to work/life b/c they're not spending hours sitting in SV traffic anymore. It will be hard for all companies in the area to overcome the new SV work/life balance. But the employees will need to understand that the reason they make so much crazy money is b/c they are willing to shift the balance to work, if not then pay will be adjusted accordingly.

Might be the beginning of the SV exodus.

  • Apple's 'M2' processor enters mass production for MacBook Pro

For all those defending the "Everything Glued together & soldered together" assembly of the MacBooks by saying "Nobody ever upgraded a computer", Andrew just called bull!

His biggest (only?) complaint about his M1 MacBook Air is that it can't meet his needs because it is frozen in time with what it came with when he bought it -- versus his MacPro which grew and developed with enhancements as his needs, wants and requirements grew.

Likewise, my 9 year old i7 Thinkpad runs perfectly well and meets all of my needs -- because it's been upgraded to a 500Gb SSD, 16Gb Ram and an internal harddrive used for ongoing, real time backups.  Without those cheap and very simple to install (5 minutes or less) upgrades the machine would have been scrap
I tried the old keep it running strategy. Bought new RAM for my Mac, upgraded the HD, etc. Then I bought a new Mac and realized that the limitations were the processor and I was wasting something much more valuable than money. My TIME! Same w/my work ThinkPad. The 4 year old one worked fine but the new one runs so much better.

You don't know what you're missing b/c you don't know what you're missing.

  • Apple's AirTag helps you keep track of your things for $29 each, $99 in a four-pack

are we sure that it isn't ONLY when in lost mode that other iPhones can "see" the tags?

Objects can be placed into "lost" mode where when another iPhone user comes in proximity it sends the device location back to the owner, similar to Tile's community feature. When in lost mode, anyone who finds them can tap them via NFC to learn more about the lost item.

    No chin, at last!

But I've had it with all-in-ones. I'll never buy a desktop Mac with the screen glued onto it again.
Your complaint is moot.  I think the new iMacs will be essentially a giant iPad with everything soldered in.  Gone will be the days where one could at least upgrade the RAM.

What's your beef with removing the display?  Open that display once (or twice) ever in its life it too much?  I can remove and reinstall my iMac display in minutes.  It's a non-issue.
I take it that you have never had to carry an iMac to an Apple Store for service and then take the chance they scratch it or mess up the stand.

The thing is too big and awkward to carry in for service.
When servicing the "computer" part they have to remove the screen and can damage it.
When servicing my iMac once they removed the stand for some reason and couldn't get it to pivot correctly. Ended up replacing w/the current model.

When my iMac died I replaced it with a laptop and two 5K displays. Much better. When the laptop needs service it portable :) Screens never need to leave home.

I was in on  these until I saw “no line-out”. If I can’t play my turntable through them, then I will stick with Sonos.
