  • 27-inch iMac flash storage cannot be replaced or upgraded

People would be less upset about the soldering if the upgrades to storage was competitively priced with market SSDs. As it is I feel ripped off.
If you compare the internal SSD to similar quality SSDs, I think you will not feel so ripped off.

If you run Blackmagic on the on the internal SSD and compare it to what is a relatively good external SSD like the BarraCuda Fast SSD that I referenced previously, you will see the SSD internal trounces the external SSD. To get faster you need to step up to a Thunderbolt enclosure and matching SSD, which is what you would need to install internally or better. That level of SSD is not inexpensive.

  • Review: LG UltraFine Ergo 32-inch is a USB-C display that moves with you

    Such a shame.

The Macintosh specific LG Ultrafine monitors have 218 PPI and 184 PPI. This 32" new monitor uses the same 24" Ultrafine resolution and as Xander0985 mentions stretches it to 32", which significantly reduces the PPI to 138 PPI. Fine for a typical business spreadsheet monitor but takes up more desk space without increasing the useable "desktop". So essentially just magnifying a 24" desktop and decreasing the sharpness of text. Great for Windows users who are use to substandard monitors but less so for Macintosh users.

    27" - 27MD5KA-B -- 218 PPI = SQRT(5120^2 + 2880^2) / 27"
    24" - 24MD4KL-B -- 184 PPI = SQRT(3840^2 + 2160^2) / 24"
    32" - 32UN880-B -- 138 PPI = SQRT(3840^2 + 2160^2) / 32"

    PROS
    - HDR10
    - 5 ms GTG response time

    CONS
    - 350 nits brightness (24" & 27"  500+ns)
    - 138 PPI
    - 32" size (w/o matching resolution)
    - power adapter brick

And this is why Apple is switching to their own silicon.
Apple's switch to ARM is not related to this.  They were going to do it regardless.
Apple Si and ARM are two completely different things.

  • Review: Level Lock is the invisible smart home lock with HomeKit for your front door

I purchased this lock to use w/my entryway lock set but had to return it.

Unfortunately for me the entryway deadbolt guts are inside the door (no not a mortice lock, which also does not work with level) instead of outside the door where you have separate deadbolt like the one shown in the video with the August lock in the picture above and therefore would not work. Otherwise, this is a slick solution.

I also really, really like that it works with HomeKit and doesn't require yet another hub!

  • Scissor-switch keyboards tipped for 13-inch MacBook Pro in 2020

I have a late 2016 MBP, yes the original keyboard was a bit noisy/clackity. In 2019, Apple replaced the entire top case including keyboard b/c of a problem I had w/the touchpad. That one was quieter and nicer and I never had an issue with it and don't get all of the hate for the later butterfly keyboards.

In the Apple store yesterday I compared the newer MBP 16" keyboard w/the MBP 13" keyboard and yes it has a more travel but beyond that I personally don't find it a huge improvement. In fact, the keys are now thicker and though they look fine on my magic keyboard aesthetically they look kind of clunky an out of place on a MBP.
