  • EU antitrust chief & Apple foe Margrethe Vestager out after 10 years

Good riddance to one of the most incompetent and destructive politicians in global history.
Destructive in what sense? I’ve seen her do the exact opposite.

Forcing Apple to allow 3rd party stores was always one of the dumbest ideas that the EU had. Mobile apps were already far cheaper on average than any other computing platform and the price difference between Android (open!) and iOS (closed!) were virtually non-existent. Those facts alone seriously undermine the idea that the App Store model was abusive. The reality is that app developers wanted to release apps on iOS because the iPhone proved to be very popular with consumers and had a large user base. Contrast this with another piece of Apple hardware that is also closed and also has a single App Store: Apple Vision Pro. Apple obviously doesn't have the power to force app developers to support the platform. Developers are looking at the relatively small install base for the first year product and choosing to "wait and see" before committing $ and development time.
It is not just about app pricing and the apps being the same on both platforms.

It’s about two companies that are essentially in control over the entire industry and their App Store model representing the entire app market.
That is dangerous especially when mobile phones are essentially a commodity with apps created by governments and organizations alike.

As more countries are following EU’s lead, it’ll become harder for the US not to follow suit, despite its corruption in politics by commercial entities.

I sense a bit of an ‘anti-Margrethe‘ sentiment in the article. Juvenile, “she’s finally gone” sentiment.

She did all the things that needed to happen and I’m confident many of her actions will at some point become normal in the US as well.

  • How to check if your social security number has been stolen in a giant data theft

I noticed that in the US you have to provide your SSN all the time.

Whereas in the Netherlands (as example) you log in through a secure system where other validated organizations can connect to (DigiD) and simply get a “SSN correct” or “SSN no match” result.

This way the SSN is not in the hands of these third parties but only the first party.
And the database is designed in such way the combination of number and personal details are stored separately, encrypted.

The US would benefit from a similar system.

Please Apple, please, while you’re at it, redesign the god-awful Magic Mouse so that most of the users don’t have to throw it in the drawer at the day of purchase, replacing it with an actual usable mouse.
Never used any of mine. Drawer filler for sure.
An actual height to fit hands, modern optics for better DPI, higher Hz rates, and updated wireless AND wired modes would make it actual Magic.  As it is, the only trick it has performed is making itself disappear from my desk as well.

(It's the only mouse with good vertical *and* horizontal scrolling, lets you gesture for other common trackpad functions as well - but was the only mouse ever to make me feel like I was getting carpal tunnel issues, and the Bluetooth connectivity is so janky compared to mice from more recent decades that it's just unusable.  I'm convinced they don't have anyone working on the mouse team at all anymore.)
    This!
    Plus:

They should design with a less slippery material. The glass feels terrible.

The shape isn’t ergonomic for professional use; the wrist is in an odd angle all the time. This needs to be redesigned accordingly.

The left and right button should have tactical feedback (which Apple does well with the crown button on the Watch and laptop Trackpads).

There should be a scroll wheel as well with tactical feedback. Not feeling anything is terrible UX.

There should be a programmable side button.

Obviously they should switch to USB-C charging… on the back!

No serious professional who switches between editing, 3D work, coding, etc should have to deal with a mouse that was designed to look cool up to a point where it compromises basic usability. It’s still in the Touch Bar era. Apple can do so much better here!
