  • Foxconn says trade war means China can no longer be 'the world's factory'

Very risky for him to plainly state this in the press. China could simply seize their operations still in China.
He has many years dealing with Chinese government. He knows Chinese government much better than you being brain washed by western propaganda  war against Chinese government.
To be fair, you don't have to "know the Chinese government" to see what it does in the world; and then extrapolate from that. Like how the CCP right now is attacking anything that inconveniences them in Hong Kong (especially media); and how they've kidnapped foreign citizens from other countries (Gui Minhai; Swedish citizen, kidnapped from Thailand). 光復香港,時代革命.

OK, folks, this is where it hits Apple.

This Trump nonsense of sanctions, trade wars, and bravado will make Apple sales tank in China.

And probably, in any other country where TikTok and WeChat is popular.

Now if only Trump has a single proof of illegal behavior on ByteDance, which is funded by (among others) several American firms.
This. I’m not Chinese and have been as big a fan of Apple As anyone. I own most of apples products and paid services such as iCloud and music. Even as I look at some of the newer android phones with some envy I don’t see myself switching because of how invested I’m with apples ecosystem. But if Apple removed WeChat which I use for work (with Chinese and many around the world), I will have to get myself an android phone. And I think that will be the beginning of a move away from Apple.
Or they will have to use another app for contacting you.

In the end it comes down to whether or not you are comfortable with going out of your way to make sure that you're only communicating via an app the CCP controls totally.

(I also used to have WeChat just for talking to people in China; but in the end it just seemed like too much of a compromise with my personal values. I do have the luxury of being my own boss, though.)

Forcing removal of apps from the US App Store is up to the US administration if they have cause. Forcing removal of apps from other countries is outside of their jurisdiction and I hope Apple fights it. Other countries have the right to determine what goes into or stays out of their App Store.
Simply put: Apple itself is not outside of their jurisdiction.

That's a weak argument, cherry picking one "socialist" government that's failing. Venezuela's economy is hampered by sanctions and corruption.

US "socialists" are primarily looking for solutions to health care and poverty reduction like in continental Europe, Sweden, UK, Canada…
Except that a moderate socialist when it comes to US government leaders isn’t as moderate as it once used to be. Even Biden—who is relatively moderate—already has plans to spend trillions of dollars we don’t have. And do you really have confidence he is strong enough to not bow even more to social and political pressure by more radical socialists? Not to mention the multitrillion dollar coronavirus package by ‘moderate’ socialist thinking in the House—part of which does not even directly address coronavirus relief, yet they won’t back down.

The issue with many US socialists is that they have become so complacent with being successful as a nation they don’t understand that money isn’t ‘just there’. There has to be incentive to get people to make the money they do. Whether that incentive is greed doesn’t really matter, because these people making tons of money benefit the entire nation.
People making tons of money can benefit the nation, or can be part of a rentier class. In modern capitalism it's often the latter.
That's the problem; at a certain level more money simply means that more money is out of circulation, and therefor NOT a benefit to the nation (it actually is a huge problem).

Like, how many more pants can a rich person wear at the same time, as compared with the poor; and exactly how many more haircuts do someone with a billion USD have, as compared with let's say someone with one million?

China's not that stupid.  If China seized a company like that, it would be the siren heard around the world for every company doing business in China to get the hell out.  China will not risk a mass exodus of companies.

I'd love to see China try that though.  Foxconn being a Taiwanese company is irrelevant imho.
If the CCP grabbed a Taiwanese company about to exist China it would just be called an internal matter; and the rich people making money out of doing business in China would just keep on getting rich while thinking that it can't happen to them.

Back in 1979 the US basically said that the CCP, not the old KMT, was the true successor of China; and as they switched position they more or less abandoned Taiwan for China to incorporate at a convenient time. Hopefully that position will change now; and I'd loooove to see Trump open formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan as a proper sovereign state. That shitshow would be glorious.
