  • Review: Sony X800H HomeKit TV is an excellent mid-tier set

    Question 1:
Are there any current 4K TV’s available WITHOUT AnthraxOS?

    Question 2:
In case the answer is depressingly No, to which degree can the AnthraxOS be disabled in TV’s from the various manufacturers?

    Question 3:
    Could a monitor—e.g. the LG 5K from the  store—double as a TV?

My personal use of a TV is exclusively to watch movies and streaming from an TV.

next: initiate Kickstarter project: 4K TV sans AnthraxOS! It should be an immediate success 👀
There absolutely are. LG runs on WebOS, Vizio runs on SmartCast. Personally, I’ve had a lot of issues testing Vizio TVs and would not recommend. LG and WebOS is just OK but I’d put the Sony TVs with AndroidOS above them. AndroidOS really is just running the streaming apps and the App Store. If you have an Apple TV (like I do), you will largely never have to interface with it.

These hinges to hold the iPad to the keyboard really is a deal breaker. I’ll spend $100 more for Magic Keyboard.
Why? My wife has a Brydge keyboard that I got her for Christmas and loves it - the hinges work perfectly.
Is the lag as bad as shown in the video? I’m using an original Apple Bluetooth wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse 2 and haven’t experienced the lag shown.
It is absolutely that bad. It is video after all and not just my impression. The lag on the keyboard is not bad at all, but the mouse is. And Apple's trackpad and mice are far more responsive than this is. Additionally, Brydge is still relying on an accessibility feature not a true mouse which is what causes some of the delay.

  • LG starts rollout of 2020 NanoCell TV lineup with HomeKit & AirPlay 2

"All support Dolby Vision as well as Dolby Atmos" might this include AirPlay 2 wifi out to HomePod and Airport Express ?
No, the receiving speakers must support it directly, and HomePod and AirPort Express do not.

  • 2020 MacBook Air versus the 2019 MacBook Air compared

    $1099 quad-core i5 2020 vs. $1099 dual-core i5... keyboard that works. Let me write the article
    "MacBook Air 2020 Nolo contendere"
Agreed.  I wasn’t that impressed with the previous gen Air, and thought the Pro was a much better deal.  This new Air is a real contender.

Apple offering a 128GB drive (at the low end) in the old Air was embarrassing.  Kudos to Apple for fixing the flaws and making substantial improvements.
That 128GB storage was just ridiculous. You eat up around 25GB just with the OS and default apps. Tack on quite a bit more for the iWork suite, perhaps some photos and that storage is gone. 256GB is a necessity and to bring that with the lower price tag is fantastic.

  • How to use Apple's HomeKit Secure Video in iOS 13

End-to-end encryption, storage on iCloud and not accessible outside the Home app. Who’s encryption is used on iCloud? If Apple has the encryption keys for iCloud are they able to decrypt the video after being served with a warrant?
Apple is encrypting and they do not have access to it and are unable to decrypt.
If Apple is encrypting they have the encryption keys so they can technically decrypt the videos. The only way Apple doesn't have the keys is if Apple isn't handling the encryption on the iCloud servers, only using the user's encryption keys to store an encrypted file on iCloud. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd just like to see a technical statement from Apple (security document) documenting the process. I hope you're correct since that makes this new feature worth using without worrying about anyone grabbing the videos and decrypting them. The user's keys are stored on the user's computer and include the camera systems key so the two together allow for the encrypting and decrypting.
It’s very similar, I’m sure, to how they end-to-end encrypt iMessages. Apple said “We designed iMessage and FaceTime so that there's no way for us to decrypt your data” at the time. The same will likely apply to these files as well.
