  • Chipolo announces wallet-sized Bluetooth tracker to work with Find My

    Dogperson said:
Recently returned chipolos after reading their “privacy” policy. They share your info with everyone and anyone from Amazon to zucker.

With the Find My-enabled versions, they have no access to your data. You don't use the Chipolo app, it is all done through Find My, encrypted, and private.

  • Native Union Snap 2-in-1 magnetic charging stand review: An Apple user's companion

    cgWerks said:
That is probably good that it charges more slowly. But, will something like this work if the iPhone is in a non-MagSafe case?
I was thinking about it, as if it is small enough on my desk, it could 'hold' the phone and AirPods Pro (with the side benefit of keeping the charged... the stand aspect is the most appealing part at the moment), but I don't want to have to buy a MagSafe case AND one of these kind of units or I'll be sinking $100s more into it. (I have an iPhone 12 mini, btw.)
You have to have MagSafe somewhere. If you are using a naked iPhone, this works. If you are using an iPhone in one of Apple’s Magsafe cases, it works. If you are using ANY third-party case that is MagSafe-compatible, this works. If you are using a case that DOESN’T support MagSafe, then no. this won’t work. But almost every case manufacturer now supports MagSafe on its cases.

  • Definitely not-CGI 'Ted Lasso' actor says he is a 'normal human man'

    doal said:
Good only knows. So much weird shit being revealed in the world. I mean, he’s probably not a CGI character. But why do so many actors look so unnatural?
The biggest reason why is lighting. In Ted Lasso, they use quite a bit of soft lighting which gives the effect of super smooth skin and other CGI-like photos. This past weekend my wife and I were looking at old photos and it is the exact same. Photos taken with soft lighting, like video shot with it, come off almost fake looking.

  • Leviton's second-generation Decora Dimmer review: Wi-Fi connected HomeKit switches

    No Thread? Doesn't Matter.
In this case, you don’t need thread. Thread is best for low power, Bluetooth connected devices. Or Zigbee/z-wave. Wi-Fi is even better because it connects directly to your network. No need for a border router or relying on other Thread devices. Some Wi-Fi devices though offer the ability to act as border routers themselves. Like Nanoleaf. The lights themselves talk over Wi-Fi but can bridge Thread devices to the network if you don’t have any other one nearby.

  • Arlo fixes bug that prevented users from adding devices to Apple HomeKit

Is the Arlo doorbell HomeKit compatible? The image in the article suggests that it is…unless it was just clickbait.
It was added earlier this year! I’ve been using it ever since. Though it doesn’t support HSV, just standard HomeKit. You can view the feed, get motion alerts, get notified when someone presses the button (including showing up on Apple TV).

I wrote about it a little here:
