ZDNET did an interesting breakdown of the costs for the lowest end Mac Pro. Not surprisingly, they conclude it is super overpriced.
Once again for the dim ones in the back — a BOM breakdown does not represent the actual cost of a product. Any product.

By way of illustration, please do find me a workstation that is as close as possible to the Mac Pro in specs, ports, and software, and yet priced far below the base cost.

    Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Most workstations from the big three come with minimum 3 years of on-site warranty included (for ~$140 extra it can go to 5 years next day service), loads of ISV certifications and NVIDIA RTX Quadro graphics options.

They also typically can cost companies 10%~20% less than what Dell/HP/Lenovo's websites show and are actually on the market today, and not in a few months when new and refreshed models are due.

Apple is not even close to offering that type of value.

Well, he didn't have to wait very long, at least.

  • Samsung's Galaxy Note 10 expected to launch Aug. 7

I really do hope that the headphone jack is not removed.

Funny things are happening with iKnockoff Knights. They are stretching the definition of "notch" to mean a camera hole only to make themselves believe Apple copied Essential Phone to invent FaceID. What an imagination! Samsung releases camera holes and their ads read "notch-free" and the iKnockoff Knights are now changing the definition of "notch" to exclude camera holes! lol

2nd they are now excusing Sammy of removing the headphone jack after Sammy poked fun at Apple for it. Their excuse? "Headphone jacks are a premium feature so no, Samsung is not removing the headphone jack only keeping it for premium customers". LOL
Are you okay? Every post from you is off on the "iKnockoff Knights" tangent. It's a phone, chill. No one is gonna die if they choose Apple over Android or visa-versa. Seriously, take some time away from the tech blogs.

Nothing is going to change that a car has 4 wheels and an engine no matter how much the Ford and Chevy crowd insult each other over which is better. Are you still upset at the whole Windows/Mac interface thing too?

  • Apple restricts online Apple Store access to newer versions of Safari and macOS

Ok - I’ve long had a gripe with this behaviour from Apple - it’s their Achilles Heel.

I first encountered it years ago with iTunes. Apple would release the latest iTunes and it would run on/support 7 year old Windows XP, but only run on the last 2 or 3 Mac OS X releases.

iTunes today is worse - the latest release will run only on Mojave, but it runs on Windows 8 (an 8 year old OS) just fine.

Now they block lock access to apple.com for 5 year old MacOS releases, but not 8 year old Windows releases.

Apple make their money from hardware - so they do everything in their power to get you to upgrade your hardware.  I get that - and I prefer it than buying from an advertising company who do everything in their power to get you to give up personal information and watch adverts.  But it’s the choice between two evils,  not the choice between good and bad.

If apple would just update the SSL libraries on those old MacOS releases then they would be secure for web browsing.
You folks just don’t give up do ya?
Where is this user factually wrong?  I've run into this myself.

I wonder about the ability to get older macOS releases up-to-date after an Internet Recovery, since you're likely to get the OS that came with the machine and not the newest that it is capable of supporting.  If you can't hit the App Store to get the latest OS you can run because your OS is too old after a restore, that kinda sucks.

Obviously, most here are smart enough to keep a download of the full installer that can be made into a bootable USB, but the average person off the street might just give up.

Do you have an idea about this to enlighten us and add productively to the discussion?

Apple greed at work, they will charge 3x what other SSDs cost.
    Buzz off hater.

No one knows anything until Apple starts shipping these.  I will give Apple the benefit of doubt then wait and see what the actual information says.  I suspect 3rd party vendors will have Apple-compatible drives.
One person's hater is another person's realist. Exactly what doubt do you have that they WON'T charge an arm and a leg based on their pricing history for upgrades? 3x is a pretty spot-on number when it comes to their pricing in the past.

You could have left off the insult and still made your point nicely with what was left.  Why the insult?

  • Mac Pro's lessons learned will trickle down to all 'Pro' products, says project lead

If this means a MacBook Pro with user-serviceable components like RAM and storage, I'd be all over that
What if it comes with stand that costs $999
That would be called a "dock".  I miss my DuoDock now.
