  • Apple Pay Express Transit arriving in London in next few months

The transit use case is different, since it doesnt have a POS terminal at counter/mid-waist level like most retailers. Thus this new protocol. But even still, you can still prime the pump -- as you approach double-click the side button, look at the phone and authenticate, then when you get to the turnstile wave it over the NFC panel. You don't have to wait to scan your face, which apparently people aren't aware of.
Or, you could just skip all this entirely, since it doesn't need to authenticate!

How is it that so many people have missed this vital point?

  • MacBook Pro catches on fire, demonstrating potential danger of batteries

He was using it on his lap. Those computers are called “lap-top” metaphorically, not literally. Laptop doesn’t mean that it is to be used on someone’s lap or belly. That model has tiny air intakes on left and right bottom borders. If those are obstructed and the heat outlet below the hinge is also obstructed (very common case when using on the lap), I wish I am wrong but the unusually excessive heat may harm vulnerable parts such as battery. I am rather inclined to find a user error in that incident instead of an error in Apple’s quality control.
As others have mentioned, this is ridiculous.

All modern Macs and PCs have thermal monitoring. They will throttle back the CPU, and in extremis will shut down completely, rather than heat to such a degree.

It's always better to ensure adequate cooling, especially on the 15" MBPs when you're looking for top performance, but you are not risking a fire by blocking the vents. (You are risking your work, if it shuts down with work unsaved.) It's possible that you might shorten the lifespan of your Mac a bit, if you do that frequently, by hastening the demise of one of the internal components. But it's unlikely to make a significant difference. The internal components are made to tolerate high temps.

  • Hands on: 1Password 7.3 for Mac recognizes apps and introduces drag and drop login

Subscription fatigue is real. I was happy paying for it as a standalone license, but it's a shame that they've made that option either unavailable or severely hidden. I want to own the license, not rent it. I want to store my vault where I'm comfortable with it, not on any password manager's server. I'm staying with 1Password 6 for now. I am not interested in software as a subscription, not when MS does it, not when Adobe does it, not when Intuit does it, and not when Agilebits does it.
Victor, i am with you, I will not update due to the subscription service and the fact I you can not sync it but through the subscription. I personally only sync via my home WiFi, i am not interested in placing my person login on something else's server.
So much ignorance. :-( Replying to both you and others:

    1) Many people here have complained that they didn't upgrade because they don't want a subscription. Ok, fine, buy the license then. That option still exists. Now, if you want to complain that they make it hard to find that option... That's fair. I think it's a bad choice on their part to make it less than obvious.

    2) Only syncing via home WiFi is an overabundance of caution, and you're just making your life harder. I keep my vaults on dropbox, and I fully expect dropbox to be compromised at some point. But it doesn't matter! The files are fully encrypted (twice in fact, IIRC) with a strong key. Nobody's going to get into my vault anytime in the next 20 years even if they get a copy of it.

    3) You can use cloud storage other than Agilebit's in the latest version.

1Password is some of the best software I've ever used. It significantly improves the quality of my life on line. It's not perfect, and I'm deeply irritated by the subscription stuff and a couple of other things, but... it's still probably the best single purchase I've ever made.

  • Tested: Thermal throttling and performance in the eight-core 2019 MacBook Pro

@AI, thank you, that was very useful, and quicker than I expected.

@Lkrupp, maybe some trolls are doing that, but it's still true that the current design is a poor choice if you're optimizing for performance. (It's a different story if you're optimizing for weight, battery life, etc.) It's also true that in the last couple of years, for the first time ever, other companies have been putting up legitimate contenders against Apple for the combined weight-batterylife-performance-style crown. In my opinion, Apple hasn't done too well on that front recently, though the latest macbook helps a lot. If I could get MacOS on another brand's hardware, I would seriously consider it, and I never felt that way previously. Of course I still won't, because Windows.

  • Tim Cook tells Tulane University grads that 'my generation has failed you'

"A plague on both their houses, shrug". The lazy center is the doom of our world. You can't be bothered to spend the time to figure out that they are not equal, and the lack of your weight added to the debate is another big nail in our collective coffin.
While I don't agree with what he said, don't call it the center.   The center tends to base their opinion on fact rather than ideology.  He was engaging in a false equivalency:  "They're all wrong (and there is no center or truth)".
Now, that's an interesting position to take.

I agree that it's a false equivalency. That was my main point. I *wish* I agreed that "the center tends to base their opinion on fact". Sadly, I don't think the center is any more fact-based than either "side". The person I was originally criticizing is a perfect example - he's too lazy to find the (readily available) facts in the first place. Also, there's some research showing that the right is generally less susceptible to facts, though the left is hardly immune to the will to stupidity.

In any case, I was careful to qualify what I said: the *lazy* center. Which, unfortunately, I suspect is most of it.
