EU will force Apple & Google to allow third-party app stores, payment services
davidw said:Apple developed iOS from the ground up, with security, privacy and data protection in mind. So now Apple should be punished by the EU for being ahead of the tech curve?
People complaining about security forget that there was malware distributed through the App Store and one advantage of iOS could also be used for sideloaded apps: Apps can be required to be signed by a certificate that can be revoked remotely any time.

Apple wants 27% commission for Dutch apps using third-party payments

Apple wants 27% commission for Dutch apps using third-party payments

Whether or not Apple crossed the line in to rent seeking is highly debatable, but capitalism requires being paid for your work and competitive pressure to counter rent seeking.
For the vast majority of the population, this is the way rent works: the landlord will promise to maintain the property during the lease and that's all. If the landlord offers the renter a renewal, it typically includes an increase in price without any promises of improvements.
That obviously isn't what Apple does. They've never increased the commission and have made significant upgrades to the iPhone hardware and iOS on an annual basis. In other words, those improvements never resulted in a higher price. That's the OPPOSITE of rent seeking. -
Microsoft says that if Apple isn't stopped now, its antitrust behavior will just get worse...
When Microsoft compares Apple to the antitrust trials against itself (Microsoft) and AT&T they are unfortunately just right.Just think about Safari not implementing some web standards (web apps) that could hurt the App Store and Apple not allowing other browser engines (Chrome and Firefox on iOS have to use Apple's WebKit engine that is also used by Safari) at the same time.Looking at the latest security problems arguments that this is for privacy reasons are looking lame... -
NSO considering killing Pegasus spyware under financial & lawsuit pressure

But the nuclear genie was out of the bottle and there was no putting it back in. Same goes for programs like Pegasus. That genie is also out of the bottle and the bad guys (governments, etc) are not going to just stop using it.
