  • Apple says 2 billion of its devices are in active use

Two billion active devices. Up by two-hundred million from the year before. That is the population of Nigeria or Brazil added every year. It is safe to assume that well over one billion users access their Apple devices each day. That is Coca-Cola-like market penetration. Coca-Cola claims that “More than 1.9 billion servings of our drinks are enjoyed in more than 200 countries each day.” It is time to put to bed the idea that Apple is a high-priced luxury that only the wealthy (or only Americans) can afford.

  • 2023 HomePod review roundup: similar sound, same price

Anyone who thinks that smart speakers are ‘hi-fi’ is deluding themselves. Neither the audio bandwidth coming through the internet is insufficient, (nor through Bluetooth for that matter) nor is the speaker itself capable of reproducing the full range of hi-fi sound. Hi-fi is for the audiophiles. They pay fortunes for top quality equipment and listen to vinyl records, for example. Three-hundred dollar speakers don’t qualify. The sound that comes out of Apple HomePod is ‘good enough’ for the rest of us. That’s who it’s for.

I have a pair on my desk. I like the 360 degree sound. The smaller HomePod mini can’t compete in sound.

  • Native WhatsApp software coming to Mac thanks to Catalyst

It’s really pathetic that Meta hasn’t released an iPad version of WhatsApp. Can anyone enlighten me on the reasons?
I wonder if they are simply unable to for some technical reason…? A WhatsApp account is linked to a phone number. Apple FaceTime and Messages are linked to a user ID, so one can message or call from any device: iPad or Mac etc. Apple has more fundamental access to the technology. Just a thought…

Separately, does FB care? After all, they didn’t need WhatsApp for any other reason than to get their hands on our phone numbers. With our numbers they have access to our purchasing habits, club memberships, etc. that conventional marketing intel will give them.

Google, their main rival, already has user telephone numbers through Android. For both companies, merely knowing what we did on their websites was not enough. Telephone numbers give the companies insights into our lives beyond the internet.

  • 2022 iPad review: Decent upgrade, bad lineup position

Kill this iPad, bring back last year's iPad Air, rename it "iPad" and lower the price. Keep home button iPad around as education bulk buy.

iPad mini, iPad and iPad Pro. Give iPad Pro additional ports (three in total): SD Card, USB-4 and MagSafe 3.

    Done.
    Yes, done!

What you suggested is essentially what Apple did.

  • Google patches seventh zero-day exploit in Chrome in 2022

Easier solution, grab the icon for this steaming pile of shit drag it to your trash bin.

    Problem solved!
But it’s the world’s most popular browser. So much for the public caring about privacy and security. They don’t.
I think that the general public don’t really understand what is happening, nor what is at stake. I’ve never read, in the popular press, nor have I seen in the media, a comprehensive account of the data that advertising companies like Google collect, and what they do with our information to profile us etc.. Explaining how Google makes these services available for free and how, for instance, the entire Android business model is constructed upon that foundation would be a great public service. I think that I once people become aware of that, it’ll be a different story.
