  • Parallels Desktop 18 increasing subscription costs in October

Weird bit of history about Parallels - it started off as a virtualisation environment for ATMs in Russia in the mid-late 1990s, then got purchased in the early 2000s by a US company and was repurposed for the Mac market.

Why if you have VirtualBox that not only supports Windows, but also many other systems? Heck some even managed hacky way to run some versions of macOS on it.

Once Parallels Desktop customer, dumped it and on VirtualBox... including Windows 11 Pro running on Linux desktop host system.

VirtualBox was also on macOS... when used some time ago... long ago.

Last time I used VirtualBox, around 5 years ago, I found it was not very well-suited to running a virtualised Mac environment - mostly quality of life things, like the behaviour of window resizing or the drive and network mapping. Parallels offers a much more convenient environment in which to work and, for me, that's worth the money. VB is fine for Windows and Linux VMs, which is what the majority of its user base wants, but it's not as polished as Parallels or Fusion.

  • Apple is exploiting features to expand its own advertising, say advertisers

    gatorguy said:
There is an antitrust investigation already underway because while Apple requires third-party apps to ask permission for ad-tracking, the company doesn't have the same restriction on its own apps.

Also of note:  Apple app developers get paid less for in-app ads when users opt out of Ad Tracking Transparency. Seriously?

Like another AI article says, Apple isn't (now?) against targeted ads, they're just against anyone but themselves doing so.
You think it's wrong for there to be a financial incentive to do the right thing?

We kind of know what is expected from Apple end of 2022 but looking for one more thing! Small but important AV1 support in hardware encode/decode or M3 in high end MAC products ?
You mean Mac products? MAC is not an acronym for anything so it doesn't need to be in all caps. It's quite annoying people still do this.
    MAC address - Wikipedia

MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control. But it's about networking, not a class of computer products so you're right to complain about the original usage.

  • Apple reportedly working on at least three AR, VR headsets

I'll take my reality without augmentation or virtualization thanks. My poor old brain can't even process 1% of the unenhanced reality around me.
You say that, but there were similar attitudes about why anyone would ever want a phone without a keyboard or a computer that fits in a pocket - and now "everyone" has one.

I see AR as a great way to reduce the cognitive load of dealing with the world. Imagine this: your wife is looking at you meaningfully after you just said something that clearly indicated you've forgotten Something Important (TM) that she told you. Your device recognises the look and replays your five most recent conversations (for your ears only), or displays a text description of key events that you had a conversation about in the past week (which it kept track of by processing the audio it passed through to you and applying some algorithmic smarts to the converted text), or brings up your shared family calendar, or...

That right there is going to be worth the price of admission for some folks.
