  • Apple Music eclipses Spotify in paid US subscribers

Anything can be spun in a positive light.  It's the beauty of marketing and selective narration.

Living in NYC, I don't know any in my social circle that use Apple Music.  They all use Spotify.  YMMV

  • Samsung confirms terrible earnings for the holiday quarter, and it will only get worse

Strange, but I did not see this information sprayed across the Internet, repeating on every news channel, along with commentary on the supposed DOOM of Samsung.  Samsung Electronics is a bigger company (revenue and product line wise) than Apple, and their drop in earnings is going to be more, so how is this not front page news?
Because Samsung is not a one trick pony. They will be fine. They are a huge chunk of SK's GDP.

  • Apple's revenue revision spawns second class action investigation

    More stupidity.

If there's one thing Tim Cook is famous for it's not giving away any information about what Apple is doing. Whether that be about future products or how the company is doing financially. He's notoriously vague.

How a realist looks at this statement:

"Our business in China was very strong last quarter (does he mean Apple's initiatives to grow in China on top of the 16th percent?). We grew 16 percent (in what? selling iPhone X? selling services? expanding factories? ramping up production? what exactly?), which we're very happy with. iPhone in particular was very strong, very strong double-digit growth there. (in what? selling services? because it definitely isn't in total iPhone unit sales in China per year)"

How a normal forum Apple fanatic/heretic looks at this statement:

"Our business in China was very strong last quarter (yeah! See Tim Cook said it was strong and he can't lie!). We grew 16 percent (yeah! See! This is growth here. He can't lie about this!), which we're very happy with. iPhone in particular was very strong, very strong double-digit growth there. (clearly Tim Cook said that the iPhone was strong there, and Apple can't lie about it! This is a fact!)"

  • Watch Apple's iPad Pro chew through Fortnite at 60fps

It’s a powerful iPad, no doubt. Speaking only for myself, the lack of a headphone jack to accept recording studio standard equipment killed the possibility of me buying one for now. I consider this exclusion a shortsighted decision. Surely no “pros” expected Apple to do that.

I don’t care about Fortnite in the slightest and I’m not going to spend about $2K for a new iPad that’s incompatible with most of my industry standard audio gear.

Apple sometimes leads in the wrong direction on product design, IMO. They’re not perfect and that’s OK.
Serious question here: why can't you just use the Apple lightning headphone adapter?  It is tying up the port or the sound quality or an objection to extra cords?
I would think all of the above. 3.5mm plugs are ubiquitous. Lightning to 3.5mm cables are not. Having to remember to carry an adapter with your ubiquitous equipment is easily forgotten. Wireless fidelity isn't quite there yet for studio grade recording.

  • Disney's Netflix rival to launch in 2019 as Disney+

I totally cannot see any challenge to Netflix here unless all you watch is Disney / Marvel shows.  The headlines calling it the Netflix rival are just plain silly and simply click bait IMHO.  Yes it will be a nice additional service to have on occasions if they allow short time subscription like HBO do, I'd sign up for a month when grandchildren visit just as I have a month here and there of HBO when a full season of a few shows I want to binge watch is available but Netflix and Amazon Prime are the backbones here.

Despite being a huge Apple fan I suspect I'll be viewing Apple's coming streaming service in the same light ... no pun intended.

I confess we are kind of lucky in that our HOA fees include a cable HD service even though we don't use it at all ... other than using it to grant access on the Apple TV app to streaming from a load of content only available if you have a cable subscription.
Disney has a back catalogue of movies and TV shows going back to the 50s, plus Touchstone Pictures, plus 20th Century Fox’s entire catalogue... I think they’ll have plenty of stuff for subscribers to watch.
As I said it's a great as an additional service to Netflix but I don't see it as a replacement which is what the term rival seems to imply. If it proves to be better obviously I'd switch but there are not enough hours in the day to have all these services even now and I'm retired!  lol.

BTW one great thing about early TV shows is they were shot on film so they can be digitized to HD and even 4K but sadly the advent of video recorders and cameras has doomed several decades to 640 x 480 pixels NTSC, PAL is a tad better not much on a 70" screen. A great example of this is the first ever Star Trek TV episode that is available in HD, once this pilot was done the rest of the shows are digital video at crappy resolutions by today's standards. I've been waiting for magic AI systems to be able to upscale for a long time in my dreams but magic isn't possible sadly.
You will start to see a lot of content missing from Netflix sooner than later. It's why Netflix is starting to produce their own shows/movies now. Much of the 3rd party content that are owned by studios will slowly move onto their respective streaming platforms leaving Netflix with less and less.
