  • LastPass password vaults crackable for $100, alleges 1Password

I don't mind the subscription fee (less than $3 a month) for 1Password.  For that small fee, I get security, they get ongoing funds for updates, maintaining their servers and security infrastructure, etc. I view 1Password as an ongoing service, not just a one-time software package.

    Obviously, your opinion may vary.

Many of us don't like ongoing subscription fees because it is very hard to keep track of these recurring expenses. An increasing number of software providers are using the subscription model and put together, it can make it very difficult for a user to keep track of these expenses and having to re-evaluate them from time to time whether a subscription is warranted. One of the lessons of Finance 101 is basically to GET RID OF subscriptions as much as possible.

I much rather pay a one-time license fee and then if I want to upgrade the software (for whatever reason) use that moment to re-evaluate whether I should upgrade (want, need, etc.) I started using 1Password when it was in version 3 long time ago and paid for practically every upgrade until the subscription model came about. I'm on 1Password 7 and do not intend to subscribe.

It's interesting that every time an article about subscription based software comes up that displeasure with 1Password is mentioned (lol, including this post!). I hope AgileBits reverses course at some point and offer BOTH subscription and one-time license fee. For a while on 1Password 7, that was the model available.

  • Steve Jobs' Birkenstocks sold for $218,750

I am a huge Steve Jobs fan, but let's face it...  That's disgusting.  What's next, stained undergarments?  Both sellers and buyers of things things need to seek professional help.
Lol. Right? What the hell are they going to do with old shoes for that price? Start a Jobs museum and hope people go and gawk at some old stinky sandals? Ridiculous.

  • Apple settles lawsuit against former employee accused of leaking trade secrets

Over a decade he worked at Apple! WTF! Decimate your career, and for what?! I agree jail time! He stole from his employer!
Well, both sides agree not to move to a trial which is what agreeing on a settlement is a result of. No trial means no possibility of jail time.

Seems like either I'm missing something or some folks don't understand. Agreeing to a settlement means both parties are agreeing to settle the matter out of court. When a settlement cannot be reached (or when one party decides not to engage with the process of settlement), one side can take the case to court in which case it would then be trialled and the determination is made by the court of law (a judge).

This country has become too liberal on criminals. Such example make employees fear of no real consequences. Anyone can steal and pass sell trade secrets to someone or foreign competitors. Over decades, this is how American innovations ended up in Chinese hands.
In the context of this settlement, it doesn't make sense. Both parties agreed to a settlement which means neither decided to take the issue to trial and therefore it did not become, well....a trial within the court.

  • Apple's lack of care with gambling app ads is a symptom of a bigger problem

At the end of the day, we live in a capitalist society where the sole aim of business endeavors is to make money, no matter the expense to our lives, the environment, etc. Relying on corporate ethics within such an environment to do the right thing for social good is delusional. Yes, Apple is better than a lot of other corporations in some things. But let’s not forget that their primary goal is to gain capital. Everything else is secondary to that.
Yes, we do live in a capitalistic society but there are many pockets of resistance to a total capitalistic society. For example: Medicare, Medicaid, free public schools. None of those are a result of capitalism. In fact, you could argue they are AGAINST capitalism being the only form of economics that runs this society.

Yeah, so RESIST! Vivre la resistance!
