  • Why Tesla can get by without CarPlay but other car makers can't

I wouldn't buy a car unless it has wireless CarPlay. I actually own a 2011 car that I love, and recently spent £1000 having CarPlay fitted.

I have this discussion regularly with a Tesla-owning friend, and he argues that Tesla provide all the apps you could need instead. And that would be absolutely fine, except of course they don't.

'How do I play my music on Deezer?' I ask.

    'Oh. Well it has Spotify.'

    'Well I have Deezer.'

'Can't you change music providers to match Elon Musk's whims?'

'No. But I also listen to audiobooks. I assume the Audible app is good?'

'Ah. It doesn't have that either. All you need to do in either case is just buy a phone mount that sticks to the windscreen, pair your phone with Bluetooth and generally pretend it's 2009.'

Ah, Tesla. The least up-to-date tech in any car available today.

  • iPhone 15 Pro: All the rumors, and what it will look like

I think it's a huge shame that they're planning to position the Max model as the premium one with better features other than size.

I'd like the best camera available but have no interest in being upsold some gigantophone that I can't hold. Frankly, I'd still prefer a 'Mini' sized 15 Pro, but they hobbled that from the beginning with lower specs and, unsurprisingly, nobody bought them.

I've had an 11 Pro for 4 years now and looks like I'll have to wait another year if I'm to be allowed to buy a flagship device in a vaguely reasonable size. Unless they do the same next year and stop me buying again.

  • Apple's Mac Studio launches with new M1 Ultra chip in a compact package

So... there won't be a 27" iMac at all??  :o
I was wondering about that — I think they killed it in favor of the Studio.
I'm not 100% sure what I feel about that. I've had 27" iMacs for the last, er, *counts fingers*, 10 or so years and was waiting for the new one.

  • Battle of the super yachts: Jeff Bezos' Y721 versus Steve Jobs' 'Venus'

    Skeptical said:
No feeding the poor from these guys. I’m all for having the super-duper-puper yachts but how about throwing more than a bone to the masses. For shits and grins, Bozos, er I mean Bezos could easily give a cool $500K to every man, woman, and child living below the poverty line and he’d still have deep pockets.
I agree with the sentiment but your maths might need some tweaking! Even taking the the current modest estimate of poverty, $500k per person would equate to 1,600 trillion, or 40x the money in the world.

  • The best new features in macOS Monterey that you'll actually use

Is Apple's clunky screen-splitting really used by 'Mac power users'? I've never seen a single person ever use it, and 'power users' use apps like BetterSnapTool or Magnet to do the job properly.

Not that I'm encouraging the Sherlocking of great apps, but I don't really understand Apple's reluctance to make proper use of ever-increasing screen sizes. I user BetterSnapTool and couldn't really operate without it - with a 27" screen a tool like that is a requirement as far as I'm concerned. Even Windows does this better than Apple, and the new Windows leaks show they've moved this further on, though still not as far as 3rd party apps. I was really hoping a new OS would finally add this kind of essential functionality natively.
