  • Apple's MagSafe Battery Pack: Hands on and first impressions

Question, does the battery pack cover the entire back of the mini minus where the cameras are, or is the top of the battery pack just under the cameras, which would make the top of the phone next to them not covered, if that makes sense?

As a VoiceOver user, I always rotate my phone to landscape so I can use the Braille keyboard to type. It's a heck of a lot faster than using the stock keyboard, and I don't use dictation since it gets too many words wrong. So if the magsafe battery doesn't go all the way to the top edge of the mini, it would make typing a lot harder, or at least I think

  • Apple's MagSafe Battery Pack has more capacity than it seems - here's why

Both are relevant information. mAh tells the capacity - how many electrons are stored in the battery and Wh how much power can be gotten out of it. Think of it as a bucket of water:  if you just pour it on it’ll make a surface wet, and if you shoot the same amount with high pressure it’ll cut through steel. Potential matters (in this case it’s momentum and pressure really). ;)

When comparing batteries mAh is as relevant as Wh. It’s dishonest to say the other one is misleading or whatever. But no battery can be sold without telling the Wh and voltage (so you can calculate the capacity) or mAh and the voltage so you’ll know how much power you’ll get out of it.

Wireless charging is convenient, but terrible. The only way to bring up efficiency is with bigger scale (think of charging busses or cars) and with small chargers the efficiency will stay quite low no matter what. Not really my cup of tea as my field is quantum physics, but I know the basics and understand the limits that come up. Smart charging techniques won’t bring up the efficiency, but help keep up the maximum possible instead (don’t take my word as gospel, but rather as a somewhat educated guess on the topic).

Edit: oh yeah, forgot to comment on the pack itself. It seems very convenient! Quite small that  can just be slipped into a bag and with care can help a phone last for a weekend hike no problem. A serious contender.

That unbox therapy channel dude seems really annoying.

  • Apple's latest Mac ad targets new college students

3000 Dollars for a computer or the same amount for a cheap second hand car and a cheaper mac alternative with something useful for science and university like linux. The customer gets luckily to decide.
Thankfully the OS doesn’t matter that much, most things are multi-platform and “real” computation happens on computers most couldn’t certainly afford anyhow. But can’t argue with preference.

My 2013 MBP was cheapest available option with the specs and size I wanted at the time. It worked well for stuff like finding simple numerical solutions with python to more complicated simulations of open quantum systems. But yeah, it was expensive still. :(

  • France data protection authority hints Apple advertising may violate GDPR

    macseeker said:
I think Apple's move in general complies with the European GDPR laws.  Seems like France has their head in a dark place and loving the smell.

Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Seems that they do comply, but it’s always good to check that they actually do. This is standard practice for checking if company X follow regulation Y. It also gives company X legal ground that they’ve been checked and they have been proved to follow the regulation in question in case of a lawsuit.

There’s also the question on how either party defines tracking. But big part of GDPR is consent, and users understand what they consent to, if they do. But yeah this article doesn’t mean that there are any actual problems, it’s just Apple gets noted (and leaked to news) easier than the other hundred companies CNIL contacts.
