Apple Board of Directors shuffle sees Al Gore & James Bell retire
entropys said:Moving away from political appointments to sector knowledge is an improvement. And yes, CEO salaries are obscene. Does anyone seriously believe Tim Apple wouldn’t do the CEO job if it was one fifth as much (or one tenth)? Their salaries are well past the point the actual amount matters. It is which CEO position it is that matters, and if it doesn’t, they shouldn’t have the job. -
Twitter has now rebranded as 'X'
How long until shareholders sue him? Of all the letters... "X" on a black background??? It looks like a logo for a porn site with an exclusive, gentleman's club vibe. Of the 26 letters, he had to pick the one everyone automatically associates with porn and NSFW?He's completely trashed the brand from start to finish. This move, it's like Coca-Cola changing the name of its namesake beverage to R. Why would I call it a Coke if it's not Coca-Cola any longer? Similarly, why would I call it a tweet if it's not Twitter? The name of the company became a verb, branding professionals make a career of an accomplishment like that. And this "genius" just threw it away because he's high AF again.I dare you to find a single person in the marketing profession not on his payroll who thinks this is anything other than a colossally bad decision. -
TSMC delays Arizona plant, blames US labor shortage
danox said:blastdoor said:quakerotis said:They are FOS. I feel no pain for them. They chose Arizona, which in 5 years will be burned to a crisp and uninhabitable.
And their water demands will only further its demise.
It is also my understanding that while a fab uses a lot of water, it's mostly recycled water. The analogy I've heard is that it's like a swimming pool -- it holds a lot of water, but then it just mostly recycles it.
And in terms of water use furthering the demise of Arizona -- I've read the biggest culprit is ALFALFA farmers. Yes, alfalfa. Somehow, people are growing one of the most water intensive crops there is in the middle of a desert.
Far better to turn those alfalfa fields into solar farms that power a Fab that's filled with water once, and then use the vast quantity of water saved from alfalfa farming to, you know, drink.
TSMC could have built the facility somewhere near/close to the Columbia river basin in eastern Washington or Oregon, and certainly not in water less Arizona. Another good location would’ve been somewhere in British Columbia just north of the US Canadian border within 50 miles of the border and within 50 miles of the Pacific Ocean.
Anywhere in the Pacific northwest near the Pacific ocean close to vast amounts of hydroelectric power (45% of the USA’s total Hydro electric output) and plenty of water. With the added bonus of having a better post secondary educational system and Microsoft and Boeing nearby.
Being in Arizona, long-term is not good because of the lack of water means you’re gonna have to duplicate your efforts in building another facility within 5 to 10 years in an area with water.
TSMC, did a bad job in scouting. Whatever they were going to build should’ve been within 50 miles of the pacific ocean between Vancouver and San Diego, the best schools, the largest population of Asians in the United States, and the best companies in Tech are all along the Pacific Coast from San Diego to Vancouver, Qualcomm in the south, and Microsoft and Boeing in the north, with Silicon Valley in the middle.Couldn't possibly have to do with Arizona's business-friendly environment, low taxes, that Intel has already been fabbing chips in Chandler for many years now so there's a workforce in the sector available to them, proximity to California, a very strong cooperative effort at all levels of government to entice TSMC to AZ, availability of affordable land within the metro area, proximity to both Sky Harbor Int'l Airport which is a major airline hub and as well the smaller Deer Valley airport (for exec jets)...If Arizona was going to run out of water in five to ten years, the RE market would have cratered already. It's not doing so, in fact people are still falling all over themselves to buy homes in the Valley even with 7+% mortgage rates.Where's the laugh react? Your comment deserves several of them. -
Apple's AirTag helps a magician find his lost bag at Newark airport
The ex worked for 10 years as a supervisor in Passenger Refunds at one of the major airlines.- don't let your bags go thru PHL if you can help it at all. Notorious for "lost" bags.
- if possible, check your bags before you leave the airport. If shit is missing, you have a much stronger case for compensation than if you left the airport before making a claim.
- don't ever put computer or photo gear in checked bags, especially if the "bag" makes it look like gear (e.g., Pelican case). Read the fine print, airlines are specifically exempted from responsibility for lost/damaged photo and computer gear in checked bags. The only such gear I've ever packed in a checked bag is stuff that is completely unrecognizable to anybody but a video professional.
- Whenever possible, travel with carry-on bags only.

New 'Shot on iPhone' film is an action-packed Mexican Wrestler movie
it can do a lot but #sorrynotsorry I am not showing up to a paying gig with an iPhone as my primary camera unless someone is paying me specifically to use it for the shoot, as was the case here.Customers expect to see gear (and rightly so). Show up with an iPhone and they of course start wondering why they're paying me all that money when they could just have their 22 year old nephew who's posting to Insta all the time show up with his iPhone and do the job, "he'll probably do it almost as well or at least good enough."Yes, I get that this is a kind of proof of concept gig. An iPhone can be a completely serviceable 2nd or 3rd camera. But as your primary? Either the shoot requires something that small and unobtrusive or else with all the kit it would take to make it a proper primary camera on a set... I'll just use my Ursa, thankyouverymuch
