  • Federighi defends Apple's iOS 14 anti-tracking feature

I don't want anyone tracking me. At the same time, to give them an olive branch, I would be willing to voluntarily indicate to trackers that I have certain interests. These would be vague. They might be something like this...
I want the ability to give them all sorts of bad data which corrupts their databases and/or crashes their systems.
Oh. Yes. Little Bobby Tables we call him.

  • What to expect during today's Apple Silicon 'one more thing' Mac special event

“One More Thing” is just that. Silicon Macs and nothing else.
This is my thought also, though it'll have to be Big Sur as well since that's is supposed to be required for ASi Macs.  And it's long overdue - in past years it's never been more than a month between all the iDevice releases and the macOS release.

Definitely looking forward to updating my 16" MBP to Big Sur.  Already purged it a year ago of 32-bit apps for Catalina of course, so I don't see anything to lose here. And I really like the new UI. Seems like a no-brainer to update this time.

  • Apple resurrects MagSafe branding for line of iPhone 12 accessories

I use the Scosche magnetic mount in car and have the steel plate attached to the inside of the iPhone case. Great setup, stealthy (you don't see the plate inside the case) and the Scosche magnetic mount keeps the iPhone in place as I drive. But the steel plate keeps my iPhone from charging when placed on a wireless charger.

Any idea if the new MagSafe cases would work with the Scosche mounts (and I could lose the steel plate)? Or maybe Belkin or Scosche or others plan to create a magnetic mount for the car that locks onto the iPhone MagSafe case?
I came into this thread with exactly the same question... I LOVE the Scoshe Magnetic mounts in my cars... so easy to flip the phone onto them and it stays put!... On my iPhoneX, I found if I used the smaller plate and put it against the bottom of my case, I could still use a wireless charger :) .... but it would be nice to have the phone work with the mount without gluing that plate to it!
I don't think we'll know for sure until the phone is actually in someone's hand that can test it... I don't see Apple answering our question.

But, as you alluded,  I'm certain someone else (if not Scoshe) will make a vehicle mount that will work with it... just a matter of time.

  • Apple debuts $699 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini

Very excited about the iPhone 12 mini, but noticed that the real cost is $729 (and not $699 as advertised) even if I buy it directly from Apple. Comes across as a sleazy move, and certainly not a good look for Apple. It would have cost them nothing to admit that the actual price is $729. FWIW, I sent a note to Apple about this.
Especially on top of the removal of the charger and earphones. It looks quite dodgy. Dodgy as.
Yep they took out $40 worth of accessories (and made shipping costs a little less) and put in a whole slew of new expensive tech and kept the prices more or less the same.  Of course they should have kept those accessories in and hiked the prices instead so we can all pay extra for crap most of us don't need instead of having the choice.  Greedy bastards.

Love the fact that Apple remove stuff from the package that’s very useful and make the omission a feature. Vapourware if ever it existed
Really?  How useful?  You really don't already have 17 each of those chargers and headphones?

And if you're one of the 6 people on earth who really don't, then what about the rest of us who do?  Why do I want to pay for those (plus the extra costs for shipping the larger boxes, and the cost to the environment, etc -- all real things not just BS marketing)... AGAIN?
That's a bit rude. Some people don't own 17. Most don't. And when I give an old iDevice away, I give away the USB charger, so I think I have only ONE charger in my house, and one headphone. Who on earth would give away an iDevice without giving away the charger/headphone too?
Not sure "rude" is fair.  But whatever we want to call it, the sarcasm and snark in the post I was replying to warranted it I think.

And yes, often we give the chargers away with the phone, but often we don't.  I've nearly always just traded my phone back into the carrier I was on a payment plan with and they don't want or give any credit for including the charger or headphones with the traded in phone. so I really do have at least 17 of those Apple USB charger bricks.  It's ridiculous.

Not including it in the box gives us the choice - and choice is better, surely?  Anyone who doesn't have one can still buy one separately (they're not exactly expensive), but those of us who do have them don't have to pay for them again. I'll bet a lot of them start showing up on ebay or whatever.  Those of us who have 17 can make a few extra bucks and those who need them can get them cheap if desired.  They last a VERY long time before failing.  As StrangeDays says above, it just seems to be win win win all round I think.
I would call it more "spin" than "win". I'm not a winner, I'm a loser. What Apple should have done was make it a free option. People who say they need one should get one for free. People like you who are honest would decline one, and I'm sure lots of people are honest like you. Right? You really do have 17, I trust. That's an odd number to be tracking mentally in your head.
You're kidding about the 17, right?  It's a figure of speech.  I'm pretty sure you don't believe my point only applies to people who have exactly 17.

Why?  Why should Apple give them away for free?  Why should anyone give anything away for free?  I'm sorry but that just screams entitlement.

I really don't understand how you're a loser in this. These new phones have a crap load of new tech in them and that stuff doesn't come cheap (especially the 5G). That they put all that stuff in, left out <$100 worth of accessories, and kept the prices the same seems pretty darn reasonable to me.  And if you really don't see any value in the new tech in these phones, then they're still selling the 11, XR, and SE for you to choose from.
