  • iOS 15 review - A solid update with excellent new features

    What happened to Swift Playgrounds 4?

    As discouraging as it’s been to hear nothing of it since WWDC, it looks like AI has forgotten about it as well.

  • Researcher testing Apple CloudKit accidentally took Shortcuts completely down

    "Frans Rosen, a bug bounty hunter for security firm Detectify" and the title calls him a researcher? He's a hacker, plain and simple. True security researchers don't allow what they're doing to impact people outside their local testing net. I don't care if Apple gave him some money, I'd like to see how many people he affected so he can use that money to pay them for breaking the system.
    Couldn’t agree more.

    Anyone doing actual scientific research should not be testing live servers as they can not be certain that what they are finding is solely due to their actions. That’s just basic methodology that’s being ignored.

    If I take joy in driving at an excessive speed, instead of being fined when caught should I be paid a bounty by claiming I am testing vehicle performance and or roadway characteristics?

  • Hands on with the new iOS 15 CarPlay features

    The feature updates are nice I guess, but nothing to write home about imo.  I think Apple is missing an opportunity.  I think they need to pull a Google and do a CarPlay OS that's equivalent to Android Automotive.  For those unaware of what I'm referencing, Android Automotive is an OS for OEM car manufacturers.  It's part of G.A.S. Google Automotive Services.  It is different from Android Auto, which like CarPlay, is essentially a phone based infotainment overlay.

    Apple could very well have OEM initiatives going on behind the scenes.  Idk.  I can only speak to what they've announced: phone based CarPllay improvements. Yay, I guess.  I just feel like their efforts would be better served at the integrated level of automobiles instead of as a 3rd party overlay.
    You probably have to wait for Apple Car.  :'(

    This is my hope, that Apple Car isn’t a vehicle, but a platform. Think HomeKit for your vehicle. Either an OBD dongle, or aftermarket head unit, that controls the lights, locks, cameras etc of a vehicle just like HomeKit items.  CarKey is nice, but a real shame that so few of even Apple’s customers will ever experience it. But if a $150 - $1000 device was available that could be installed in any late model vehicle, that would greatly expand Apple’s ecosystem.

    edit: meant the port, not the rapper

  • Swift Playgrounds for iPadOS 15 lets users code & submit apps to App Store

    @crowley ;

    A lot of simple apps probably, and without actually seeing the constraints that comes with the playgrounds dev-en, possibly convoluted interfaces.

    But since Apple will have total control of the compiler and environment I’d wager they’ll be better apps then a lot of what is created in these cross platform monstrosities and then hoisted upon us.

  • Discord reverses course on iOS blanket ban of NSFW content

    It seems to me that those who want to take their apple device and do what they want to it think that their proposed actions would not affect the security of the greater apple ecosystem. I myself think that perhaps it has been too long ago for these to have experienced jailbroken iPhones, or I’d find it hard for them to espouse that belief.

    But perhaps for the benefit of the doubt, maybe this compromise;

    You want to use a third party App Store, mod, payment system, repair, or parts? Have at it, but in doing so, you sever your device from the apple ecosystem. No apple support or services at all on the severed device. I’d propose that even the Secure Enclave on the device should no longer function. Then if they want an apple device their way they can have at it, but you’re on your own.
