  • Apple again rumored to drop charger and earbuds for 'iPhone 12'

Many people have a bunch of the crappy 5W chargers Apple has been foisting on them -- even though every phone since the iPhone8 has been able to handle fast charging from a 30Watt brick.

Apple needs to supply quality chargers.  They are as much a part of the phone as the screen.  Without the brick, not even a wireless pad will charge the phone.

But, one thing they might do is give the user the option of a USB-A or USB-C brick & cord -- partly because the USB-A connection restricts the power it can provide and is being replaced by USB-C in a number of areas such as MacBooks.
I like the idea of offering such options, but they should be just that: options. It's important to minimize packaging and plastics (not to mention electronics) that come as automatic "bonuses."

  • Republican bill seeks end to 'warrant-proof' encryption

I shudder to think of a time, when today’s Antifa comes to power and then exploits weakened encryption to “enforce the law” against someone like me who engages in legitimate activities, civil disobedience or similar. Do not think that the Obama administration would not have wanted to have that kind of power, too.

I shudder to think what the current administration would do with such power, too, but you're right that no one with power will ever want to do without a tool once it's been given. That's why encryption must remain strong – to protect all citizens.

  • Apple has a clear path to be the first to hit a $2 trillion valuation

So this guy has a four year 'plan' to get AAPL to $2T? Then why isn't he already Apple's CFO? But remember, the Dutch East India Company was worth $7.9T in 1637 so Apple is just a shit-house gnat, right?
A rather odd comedy-parison. AAPL's valuation is the share price x share value. The DEI valuation includes capital like ships, entire countries, slaves, so much pepper!

    … So much pepper …
And nutmeg. Don't forget the nutmeg. Mmmmmm.

  • Home automation company Wink under fire for surprise subscription mandate [u]

The worst things that ever happened to computers were the in-app purchase and subscription software.
Only to people like you that think everything should be free, or cost $9.99 once for unlimited lifetime usage and updates.

For the rest of the real world, it is the best thing that has ever happened to make the 1000-fold increase in demand for software almost profitable.
I don't think it should be free or just $9.99, but a copy of software should be available for actual puchase, not lease. And I don't think that should entitle a buyer to endless updates, just a few point-version bug fixes. Major upgrades should be priced accordingly (perhaps with some accommodation for existing customers).

  • iPhone SE already seeing strong sales, Android switchers

The best til last. "At least at this point".

That is Tim 'Punter' Cook speaking.

It is literally way too soon to draw conclusions and, given the unpredictability of the situation, why Tim 'CEO' Cook chose to give no guidance for the next quarter.
If your implication is that he's expecting this to happen in the next quarter and just not saying so, that's tinfoil hat talk. There's no guidance because the state of the economy worldwide is too much in flux. Maybe a recovery will begin; maybe all sales will fall; maybe people will invest in high-end iPhones instead of computers; and maybe people will buy more less expensive phones. The Magic 8 Ball just doesn't know.
