  • AccountEdge abandons Catalina compatibility, customers looking for alternatives

I Applaud account edge on this move! Once upon a time Apple would bend over backwards to be compatible with the rest of the world. Now Apple is the misbehaving ape swinging it’s conform and control arms around wildly. This behavior is causing developers to leave the platform. furthermore, business wise, financially it probably makes sense not to pursue the dying mac market. Sad.
I guess I’ve been asleep during the whole five minutes of Apple history during which they bent over backwards. Seriously, now: bending over backwards for compatibility can be said for Microsoft, but never – ever – for Apple. Look at how many times the APIs have changed in the last 20 years, and how many times previous APIs have become deprecated. In that same time, on Windows, you can still use Windows Me apps in compatibility mode. (Try running Mac OS 9 apps – same era – for fun!!!) The owners of AccountEdge simply didn’t want to put any money in their MacOS code, and they decided to blame Apple. The one who came up with this pitiful excuse probably thought he was being “Einstein” brilliant, but forgot to test his brilliant excuse on knowledgeable individuals. In real life, AccountEdge management come across as a bunch of incompetent managers, because if there are difficult transitions to make in computing, the one from 32 bit to 64 certainly isn’t one. Even more so for an accounting software.

  • Apple open-sources HomeKit Accessory Development Kit to spur adoption, grow new standard

The main problem for home automation has long been the lack of a standardised communication protocol. Zigbee is one of the most used, and obviously the one with the most traction, but it has limitations too. So the creation of a standardisation body where both Zigbee and Apple are present makes me hopeful that a more secure, more connected standard will happen. Here’s hoping that this project will not take a “Taligent” tangent.

  • Apple open-sources HomeKit Accessory Development Kit to spur adoption, grow new standard

HomeKit has been a failure for quite some time. Happy to see that Apple is finally taking note of this fact. (Note : I'm not saying that HomeKit doesn't work well, but it needs a market presence. And right now, HomeKit-designed devices are scarce. Many were promised, few were actually delivered. And most by big companies, few by innovative ones.)

  • Russian bank exec says Apple Card has 'few innovative features' [u]

Americans will be miffed, but he’s mostly right. As a Canadian, I can say that Apple’s credit card offering isn’t impressive at all. Most of what is offered as new or revolutionary has been standard for years here.

  • Apple faces class action lawsuit in Quebec over battery life

The Quebec law does not state a duration for, say, battery life. That would be ludicrous considering that some devices are not meant to last as long as others. The law, however, incorporates the concept of “fitness”. That is, that a device must be useable for the length of time it has been sold for. The law does not require a device to remain in the same state than the day it was bought for the lifetime of the product, only that it remains usable. The law sets a quality baseline. And this baseline is not very high. It’s a consumer protection act after all.
