  • Tile CEO 'welcomes' AirTag competition from Apple's 'runaway monopoly train'

Most of the Tile issues with iOS seem to be about nagging privacy notifications (in their words tile looks broken).  I can't tell if this is because iOS is doing something in software that can't be turned off (bad), but I don't get those for any other devices that are using location (HR and cycling monitors, AirTag...) or if Tile needs  to update their software.  I doubt it's permanent or un-tweakable.

  • Australian retailer pulls AirTag over battery safety concerns

According to the one I have in my hands, it's pretty easy.  Press, twist and go.  I see their point.
According to iFixit’s recent teardown of the AirTag, the battery lid is quite difficult to remove. They state that even with clean, dry fingers it’s hard to get enough friction to turn and release it.

  • Apple sues former employee for allegedly leaking to media

I was under 2 NDAs with Apple for external research, including some prototypes, working with students who were under 18 and could not sign a contract.  That was fun.  Our project manager flew out for a site visit, and the woman with Nordstrom's next to him struck up a conversation about careers, and asked more and more questions about his work, digging a little more each time. He briefly wondered if she would grok or remember if he talked about the exact details, but ultimately decided against it.  When they got off the plane she handed him her card - IP attorney - told him he passed the test with flying colors.

  • Larry Tesler, who showed Steve Jobs around Xerox PARC, dies aged 74

He will be missed, and he has quite an under-the-radar legacy.  I ran an external research site for ATG while Larry was there.  Very, very creative bunch, willing to find out what works and what doesn't rather than cram features into an app.  His team also developed Cocoa ("java for kids" that needed a name change after the Cocoa API) that would become StageCast, a programming environment that presaged the coding model for Scratch, Blockly, Tynker, Mindstorms, etc.

  • Health records firm Epic, some 60 client hospitals urge against data sharing rules support...

Looks like commenters failed to read the article. Epic says they need 12 months to plan, 36 months to implement.

Given we're talking about health care records, it would probably be best to plan for security and implement correctly.

How many would like their health care records handled like the Iowa caucus fiasco?
Look at the the actual letter content.  What EPIC is saying is "just do it the way we do it", and lists the existing solutions they feel are adequate.  Not a stretch to bet there is an existing revenue arrangement that would be disturbed by Apple's entry into the field.

My EPIC experience?  Victim of a breach and subsequent PHI theft, affecting 326K people.  Hospital had to set up a direct hotline to EPIC to handle patients who had their data compromised.  2 months from breach to customer contact.  Free ID / credit protection, etc.  Just like Staples, Target, Home Depot did in their sloppy work.  Oh, and it's a research hospital.  I've served on their IRB, and in this regard the data has a lot more ramifications than ID and credit card number.

At this point, Apple has a far better track record with my data than EPIC has.  EPIC has to get their own house in order, and really has no leg to stand on with regard to Apple integration per se being a data threat.
