  • Google investigating reports of screen burn-in on Pixel 2 XL

And that is why I said Apple aren't investing into LG OLED for Mobile Phone.

LG's P-OLED aren't likely to catch up to current Samsung's AMOLED in 2 years times, and that is assuming if Samsung's OLED tech are standing still. I have much more faith in JDI then LG on mobile OLED.

While the question can and should be raised, the fact that it comes from Ted Cruz is just discrediting the whole process :)
Why should the question be raised to Apple and not direct to China?

  • Qualcomm CEO reiterates Apple feud comes down to IP pricing

Just as I expected - a bunch of hypocrites. The minute an app developer claims 30% is extortion, everyone comes out with "Well go make your own app store then!"

But when its happening to Apple it's "Grossly unfair". Which is it? There's a hell of a lot of R&D that's gone into the radio chip that Apple relies on. Without it, there is no smartphone. Cry all you like but this is no different to Apple extorting its developers.
There is ONE, and precisely SINGLE Mobile 4G market.

There are two, and more should the need arise ( In China or India ), of App Market.

The App market which Apple Controls, has roughly 20% of the World Wide Unit Shipment Every year.

And, the ONE and SINGLE 4G Market has 100% of itself.

There is a word and Law on Monopoly.

No one said they didn't do hell of a lot of R&D. But somehow Qualcomm's HELL of a lot of R&D is worth 5 times more then every other *combined*, that is Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson included.

The so called 30% fees being extortion, has never been worst in pre App industry, where worldwide distributor, wholesale, retail margin included, and Marketing, if you ever want it to be featured. Developers would likely get less then 30% of the Final Retail Price of their software.

I am pretty sure that Smartphone today, include (mostly ) a Phone, a Computer, a Music player, a Video Player, and Camera. by Camera metrics smartphone cameras has completely wipe out the non DSLR camera industry. Which i expect, most of these will work without an 4G, or specifically LTE Radio Chip.

  • Qualcomm CEO reiterates Apple feud comes down to IP pricing

Pricing of IP on basis of percentage of final retail price of an end product is NOT FAIR. How can the cost of IP be $5 for a low priced Android selling at $100 while it costs $50 for a high priced iOS selling at $1000.

If that’s the basis, why not priced your IPs at dealer price of your own chip then??????
Well it isnt straightly Final Retail Price. It is the price Foxconn sold back to Apple. So it is significantly less, having said that, it is still not "really" fair.

The idea of percentage based Patents fees stem from the product or services are not large scale enough to cover or recoup what ever investment were made into those patents. So the higher priced product, are paying more to help where smaller player could also have a chance in the market. No one would have thought what a niche and rich only piece of equipment called Mobile Phone one day become ubiquitous.

When we have 3.5B Smartphone Users, and likely 5B in the coming decade, it is hard to name a services or market that has similar scale. It would only be fair if there were Cap to these fees. Which we still dont know yet. A Cap means more devices you make the cheaper it is, but Apple has never chased volume.

Then there is Apple's LTE Modem. I am still very skeptical of Apple making their own Baseband ( It is possibly harder to design and get right then CPU ), but now they have W1 ( Bluetooth only ) W2 ( Bluetooth & 802.11n ), it will only make sense 802.11ac / ax and other Wireless technology continue to merge in, the plan would be to have 4G / 5G in every Apple devices.

“Despite being just one of over a dozen companies who contributed to basic cellular standards, Qualcomm insists on charging Apple at least five times more in payments than all the other cellular patent licensors we have agreements with combined" - Tim Cook

Five times more then other's total's combined. Sometimes it is hard to figure this out, If Apple is estimated to paid roughly $10 per iPhone to Qualcomm, then there is only two dollars going into the pool for others, that is around $500M to Samsung, LG, Huawei, Nokia, Ericsson, ZTE.

Really Qualcomm should only ever get $500M max, compared to the current $2.5B. And even $500M is quite a lot for someone with 40% of 4G patents.

*And people keep saying Apple are squeezing their suppliers? ( They may be an offender, but in other industry there are many other big company which have done things ten times worst. )

  • Apple's head of iCloud infrastructure leaves company, report says

Oh please let this mean iCloud is being transferred under Craig Federighi.
Trust me with Siri's head ( Gates ) , assuming Eddy dont mess it up, it is in good hands. I wrote on this on AI a while ago.

What that basically means is that Apple now has its own Internal PaaS ( Platform as a Services ). The Platform will ( or hopefully ) evolve independent of the Product running on top of it like Siri, iTunes, etc.

I wrote that in 2015. I guess it takes two years for Apple management to realize the obvious. At least now we have the confirmation iTunes, iCloud will move to Siri's infrastructure. Better late then never. ( Sigh )

I also write about how Apple is late to the Cloud Infrastructure long time ago, may be even back in 2013. But things hasn't changed much, even with the rumors of so called Project McQueen. Now I think i have a better understanding of why. Apple doesn't compromise, which means all the Datacenter have to be using 100% renewable energy, and they dont build DC in a hurry. They were happy to sit on others Infrastructure for as long as they could unless they have some ridiculous good deal.  The 2nd Reason is the most important one, politics, building one, and holding Data in some countries requires lots of legal and thoughts.

Well at least they have their CDN finish and done.

P.S - I really wish Apple could use FreeBSD on their Server.
