India may grant Apple retail presence, tax breaks in exchange for building iPhones locally...
gmgravytrain said:I'm taking an educated guess, and it appears hardly any consumer in India will buy an iPhone. I believe Apple has deliberately priced itself out of that market, so is there really any point of Apple establishing a retail presence in India. 99% of Indian consumers are going to buy Android smartphones and Google is making sure their hardware partners are selling extremely inexpensive smartphones to Indian consumers to further kneecap Apple. I would think Apple is just wasting good time and effort for consumers who aren't going to be buying Apple products. To me, that's like Porsche opening up car dealerships in a country where people have no means to buy their cars. The Indian government is trying to persuade Apple to build factories and provide jobs for people who don't have the slightest intention of buying iPhones.
Do you know what the iPhone market share percentage is in India? Something like a paltry 2% and falling. That's how much the India consumer is interested in iPhones. Google is laughing hard and Tim Cook seems oblivious to the fact. Apple has a near-zero chance of gaining market share in India or anywhere else. Android dominates the entire global smartphone market and Apple refuses to do anything about it. Game over.1. Not According to Actual Figures. So you will need to explain yourself a bit,2. Consider the same for China. Everything Tim Cook is doing, is basically helping India to model the Chinese Ecosystem in product production. This is huge for India. And all they required is tax break. So India gets all its Apple Manufacturing Partners to set up in India, and Apple gets some Tax Break for selling and working with India, Looks like Win - Win to me. -
Apple chip supplier TSMC preps first-ever 3-nanometer factory as founder announces retirem...
A few things to keep in mind.3nm is also part of 5nm in TSMC terms. Much like how 20 / 14 nm and 10 / 7nm are played.So2017 10nm2018 7nm2019 7nm+2020 5nm*2021 3nm*2022 3nm+*I am guessing the new Fab has something to do with EUV, where TSMC has it planned to be around 2020 / 2021. Since nothing about EUV is confirmed yet ( it is always another year and ASML will make it ), likely TSMC has a few backup plan incase things do get wrong.Somewhere in the future, we will have to use something other then silicon as we reach the point where smaller nodes brings negligible benefits at cost may be even Apple dont want to go. -
Samsung manufacturing arms poised to make $4 billion more from iPhone X than Galaxy S8
Per iPhone X, not iPhone 8.And those est of ~$100, roughly 70% of those are going into OLED, if previous report of OLED price are accurate.Remove that, Samsung has less then $30.If we could just move back to Japan Display FA LCD, get NAND from Toshiba ( Which Apple has shares ), Capacitor back to Japanese Company ( Very likely next year ). -
Apple Music breaks through to 30 million subscribers
1. I dont know how that 3 Billion yearly revenue for Apple Music was calculated, 30 Million paying subs, with family member plans, student plans, countries which charges less then $10 per month. Minus Music Label company collection, Apple dont make much, if any money out of it Apple Music. So no, one make it sound like Apple instantly make all the money back they bought for Beats from Apple Music. Although i must say the headphones are doing well for Back to School Promotion.2. They are may be millions of hard working people. So Iovine working hard does not mean he is working good. And I bet he doesn't work any longer hours then Marissa Meyers. The point is, like Steve Jobs have said, "Somewhere between the janitor and the CEO, reasons stop mattering," that Rubicon is "crossed when you become a VP." If you live in US ( And possibly UK or some part of Europe ), great. Apple Music has a fairly decent music collection, so despite its utter failure in Application UX Design, it is doing fine against Sportify. Elsewhere around the world, Apple Music is utter crap.3. It is good though I think Iovine has learned, or may be he has been pressured from others, not to go on about the Next Song.4. Iovine taste on speakers is more bass and more Bass, which he said the unimproved, first version of Beats were great and Apple's Earpod were crap. Holy smoke. Interestingly somewhere along the line Beats start to produce slightly more "balanced" sounding headphones that were only slightly better then original, and since Apple bought them they have improved a lot. I was worry this madness and disease of Bass taste will spread into Apple, luckily it did not.5. Iovine has also stopped mumbling on about Music Discovery, because the Data has shown, apart from those ~10% Music fans who love new way to find out new music, majority of users dont sign up a subscription to discover new music. The Apple Music UI design has reflected on this changes as well to be less about what Iovine's dream of everyone searching for new music. It was may be a noble goal, but either people dont want it or his implementation of the idea does not work.6. I still strongly believe, Music Subscription wont last. Buying Music will come back, as I have recently learned, Subscription Music sometimes means they could take away my Songs whenever the two company dont have a deal. Or we make a better way to fuse the two together or fix this problem.7. Apple Music will need to improve a lot. It is not all Iovine 's fault. Apple Map in Japan is totally unusable. And Japan used to be Apple's biggest International market before China grew so large. Given Apple's half hearted attempt in market other then English Speaking counties, there are things they simply dont get it.

Amazon takes on Apple TV 4K with updated Fire TV featuring HDR, Dolby Atmos support
In a perfect world, Apple would have something similar to LG OLED TV and some other Chinese TV, where all the electronics are in a separate box, and a proprietary cable for the Panel. You could then update the box every 2 - 3 years. But then I think we have reached a stage with SoC ( A11x Next year likely faster then 90%+ of all PC ever shipped), Wireless ( 802.11ax is around the corner ), and Panel where the tech are all good enough for many years to come, and are lacking some serious UX changes.
