  • Inside High Sierra: HEVC promises to keep quality high, file sizes low for videos, photos

This reminded me to go over to slashdot and see how the open source Stasi at slashdot reacted to Apple's HEVC announcement. Predictable, but entertaining none the less. You will be pleased to know that AV1 will be the best when its bitstream is finally sorted, and Apple has made a huge mistake. Just you wait!
i remember the same slashdot arguments about codecs when the iPod first came out, then when Apple adopted H.264.
AV1 isn't better then HEVC for crying out loud. They are on the same level, and one may be better then another depending on scenario, as with all encoding codec. The AV1 Encoding and Format is like a living thing and changes constantly, HEVC format and standard was done quite a while the encoder still need more time to tune and test before it reaches x264 level of maturity.

What's different though is that there are hundreds of millions of HEVC Hardware decoding SoC shipped already.

    >>>>It is not clear who Apple has chosen to license HEVC from -- but it is likely around $25 million annually, given MPEG LA's terms for using the technology.

You dont get to choose who to license from, You have to license them all. MPEG LA, HEVC Advance Group, and the newly announced Group from Qualcomm, Sony, Panasonic.... etc The first two combined to $75M / year. The third group has not announced their pricing, and there is also technicolor, they pulled out of MPEG-LA last year.

Compared to the $5M / year for H.264. HEVC is insanely expensive.

  • Apple Watch helped CEO Tim Cook lose 30 pounds

This is pure marketing play then actual fact. I have successfully lost 28 pounds, and by working out, you are likely to build up MORE muscles.

I.e, Doing what he suggesting implies he has lost 30Lbs of FAT.

Look at Tim cook. Look at him over the years of sitting, you cant hide your tummy for whole of Interview.

  • Apple could ditch Qualcomm for new Gbps Intel XMM 7650 modem in iPhone 8

Mr. Cook.  Please use the best chips possible even if they are from QCOM.  We don't need recall or performance issues down the road.  If INTC is not ready for prime time then don't use them.
The XMM 7650 is looking very solid. Problem is that it is still on 28nm. And likely sucking more power.

What's worst is Intel Radio Front End, which really is severely lacking behind Qualcomm. But nevertheless Intel's modem should be a lot cheaper.

  • Apple's iPhone drops to fifth place in Chinese smartphone market

Looking at those Numbers, it is actually not that bad.

Only Apple provide Actual Product Sold. Others are Shipped. I expect the number to be off by as much as 5% for Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi.

Even with Huawai, most of the Top 5, likely 90%+ of their Sales are below $300USD, the starting price for iPhone SE, is $400 USD+.

Sometimes I wonder, why all the Top 4, uses Component from Manufactured in GF, Samsung, TSMC from Qualcomm etc, None of the top 4 have to pay import Tax.The iPhone however require an Import tax, making it 17 to 20% more expensive.

  • Fifth generation of Apple TV to bring 4K compatibility, little else - report

I think this signals something else entirely ( If the rumours is true ).

In Apple's style, they will also launch 4K content on iTunes Stores, for 4K Movies to space / bandwidth efficient, you need HEVC. The next ( or really the current ) generation of Video Codec.

But HEVC has an ridiculously expensive license agreement, $25M Max/ year to MPEG-LA and $40M  Max/year to HEVC Advance. 10 times the cost of AVC / H.264 $6.5M Max / Year. The sudden appearance of HEVC Advance Group was the reason Apple dropped all mention of HEVC / H.265 from their product page, initially being listed as a technology for Facetime. Late last year, HEVC Advance group announce that HEVC software implementation to be free of Royalties charges, both encoder and decoder. So theoretically Apple could put in a powerful CPU within Apple Tv to use HEVC in software mode.
