  • Reported 2016 MacBook Pro graphics issues likely caused by third-party software [u]

Even if the issue was related to 3rd party software, shouldn't the OS protect against that? It's not like the OS allows software direct access to the hardware. I thought Macs abstracted such direct hardware access (short of the user bypassing those OS protections).

  • UL safety testing shows 99 percent of counterfeit iPhone chargers lack safeguards, are unsafe

The article title is missing a critical word:

"UL safety testing shows 95% of third party CONTERFEIT iPhone chargers lack safeguards, are unsafe"

To lump all 3rd party USB chargers into this claim of poor quality is a bit misleading. Bottom line...don't buy cheap crap online. "Too good to be true" still applies. But it probably is in the same category as recent studies that have shown that certain portions of the population have demonstrated an inability to identify fake vs real new stories they read online.

  • Apple investigating iCloud Calendar spam solution

    copeland said:
I can't understand that Apple hasn't included a "Decline and don't answer" button from the start.
The create a new calender and move the invitation solution works for me but that is far from Apple's "It just works".
I became convinced long ago that nobody at Apple actually uses Calendar/iCal...at least not in the way the rest of the world uses calendars. From the very beginning iCal was little more than a glorified to-do list.

And a decline-don't-answer button would have probably cluttered the UI too much. ;-)

  • Apple hires Wired magazine creative director to design team

Considering his experience is with magazines my guess is he's either going to work for the marketing department or the software UI team (Alan Dye, who leads that team, came from Schiller's org).
Good grief, the last thing Apple's UI design group needs is another graphic designer to help things look pretty when you are just looking at it (ie, not actually using and interacting with it.). How about a few usability and functionality experts who aren't going to obscure the power of Apple's software behind a bunch of makeup.

  • Kwikset debuts Kevo Convert smartlock, Canary brings security cam footage to iPad & Apple TV

Why is the security camera facing into the house rather than out?

Anyone have any experience with, or knowledge of, a related product called Ring (https://ring.com/).  At $200 is seems somewhat compelling.  My wife asked me to get it (it was probably featured on the Today Show or something), so I figured I could ask around.

I think you are mixing the two different products. The lock doesn't have a camera. The Canary video camera is an entirely separate device. Not sure why AI merged them into a single story as they are entirely unrelated.
