  • Apple A9 chip fab TSMC reports record earnings, casting further doubt on 'Peak iPhone'

A bit of Spinning and selective reporting going on in this article.

    TSMC also said this:

"Demand for high-end smartphones has started the year weak, while in other segments there are already signs of upward demand momentum in emerging markets including China, the world's biggest for smartphones, TSMC said." http://www.reuters.com/article/us-tsmc-results-idUSKCN0US11720160114

    Wall St Journal:

    "
Apple’s Slowing iPhone Sales Take Bite Out of Suppliers’ Revenues
Taiwan’s TSMC expects first-quarter revenue to fall more than 10% on slower demand for smartphones"  http://www.wsj.com/articles/apples-slowing-iphone-sales-take-bite-out-of-suppliers-revenue-1452773860

TAIPEI—Companies that make parts for Apple Inc. are warning of lower first-half revenues, in a sign of slowing sales of the latest iPhones.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. , which manufactures the chips that run iPhones and other popular electronic devices, forecast Thursday its first-quarter revenue would decline by as much as 10.8% from the previous year, citing demand weakness for high-end smartphones." http://www.wsj.com/articles/apples-slowing-iphone-sales-take-bite-out-of-suppliers-revenue-1452773860

Apple components contribute 20% of sales for TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip maker, according to a  Credit Suisse report.

Largan Precision Co. , which supplies iPhone camera modules, said it expected “quite a weak” first quarter, while Catcher Technology Co. , a maker of iPhone metal casings, said its revenue for the first half would be flat from a year earlier."http://www.wsj.com/articles/apples-slowing-iphone-sales-take-bite-out-of-suppliers-revenue-1452773860

Seems to be a bit of variance from DED's quite astonishing interpretation of TSMC's results.  Looks like he ignored what they actually said.

We are still having to deal with fallout caused by your last Republican presidency - ISIS, refugees, etc.  I don't think Europe could survive a Trump Presidency.

Our corporation taxes are lower than they are in the US - try again.
ISIS rose to be a regional power because of the Bush presidency?? Wellll. . .  ok then. . . (???)

If the rumoured price is correct, you would be so wrong there.

Xiaomi Mi5:  "The new phone starts at just 699 yuan (roughly $107). It packs a 5-inch 720p display, a long-lasting 4100mAh battery, a Snapdragon 616 processor, a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. It also runs Xiaomi’s latest MiUI 7 Android-based software."

...and it is metal, not plastic.
.............and it runs on Android. Game over.

By the way Xiaomi unit sells have been down about 20% this holiday season. And Xiaomi has missed their goal of 100,000,000 units sold in 2015 by 20,000,000-40,000,000 units. Their ponzi scheme is about to end. The only reason they could get away with selling phones for a lost was because of unit growth. Now that growth has stopped they will go bankrupt.
I was not intending to say anything about Xiaomi in particular,  it was just an example of why touting a $500 phone as tool for taking on emerging markets is so completely bogus given what else is available.  I wonder if you and the OP have the slightest idea of the scale of poverty in poor countries?

I watched a BBC program last night about a Bangladesh <--> India train service.  They looked at a young guy who rides the train selling bars of chocolate.  He had a wife and two children to support.  They showed him taking a huge gamble in investing in his business by buying a plastic ice box/cooler to make his wares more appealing and less molten.  It had taken this man 3 years to scrape together the £18 the cooler cost.

Earlier today i was reading an article about an area in Indonesia where a lot of families send their early to mid-teen daughters off to population centres to work as prostitutes so they can send back money to their families, an area where schooling is so poor and inadequate it peters out at age 12 and there is no High School.

There are billions of people on this planet who can't afford your first -world self-satisfied and financially smug OS snobbery.

I prefer John Gruber's writing. Gruber clearly writes from the perspective of an Apple fan but still manages to maintain some objectivity. Gruber builds such a compelling (and concise!) case, when he writes, that he never needs to make spurious statements like '[Apple] sold the only profitable tablets and smartwatch'.
That is the problem with articles written by DED. He seems to lack the ability to be concise, which IMHO detracts from the message. Why use 10 words when 1000 will do. Also the almost inevitable diatribe against Google/Android.
He writes as if he had an Aspergers-like fixation on Apple.

Good to see Apple is going to get rid of an universal port in favor of making most users buy yet again another dongle. Unlike getting rid of optical drives in Macs there is no real space saving benefits to getting rid of a 3.5mm jack.
Let me guess you're just learning to read. I made it clear in both of my posts that getting rid of optical drives made sense because there was a clear benefit. Getting rid of a 3.5mm jack has no clear benefit when it comes to reducing size. If you're going to comment on my posts at lease read them.
Perhaps if you would elaborate a bit more, perhaps we could properly address you. The 3.5mm jack hardware takes up about 184 cubic mm. How is that trivial in a device measured in mm?

It could be thought trivial when that actually only represents roughly 0.28% of the volume of an 6S and 0.2% that of a Plus.  Fits my definition.
