  • Trump calls tech CEOs to June meetings, orders overhaul of US government IT

    volcan said:
Like putting Trump, Cook, Gates and Musk around a table to discuss IT makes any sense. None of those people know anything about IT. But that is apparently how government works. Let's put a bunch of people with zero knowledge about a given project in charge of it.
Just because it's how Trump's government works doesn't mean it's how all government works.  Trump likes photo ops.

  • Apple an 'antifragile monopoly,' more secure than critics believe, analyst claims

    brucemc said:

He is not implying that Apple has a traditional monopoly at all - he clearly states the opposite.
You're absolutely right.  Dediu is a singular genius and until you have a thorough understanding of his analysis, you won't have a deep understanding of Apple.  As you say, Dediu makes it clear that while Apple is not a traditional monopoly, they have some of the characteristics of a traditional monopoly.  Apple does indeed have a monopoly on the Apple ecosystem, and there's never been a precedent for this business.

  • Tim Cook explains why Apple was present at Trump tech summit

    frac said:
And Steve Jobs attended Obamas meeting with all the tech companies. No explanation necessary.
Steve Jobs was a life long Democrat who gladly helped the Obama election campaign. He was also a long time friend of the Clintons. I lost a lot of respect for Tim Cook this week; but probably more now with his deplorable writing skills.
I'll let TC do the rebuttal.
"I've never found being on the sideline a successful place to be. The way that you influence these issues is to be in the arena. So whether it's in this country, or the European Union, or in China or South America, we engage. And we engage when we agree and we engage when we disagree. I think it's very important to do that because you don't change things by just yelling. You change things by showing everyone why your way is the best. In many ways, it's a debate of ideas."
    Deplorable to think otherwise.
I agree with frac, Tim rebuts very well before the comment was even written.  And "deplorable writing skills"?  Hmm.  I think Cook's prose is fine ... clear, direct and easy to understand.

  • Apple's Tim Cook takes close seat to Donald Trump at tech summit

    mobius said:
I heard there were suggestions that they should all boycott the meeting. Better to be present to try to persuade, or at least have your voice heard minus the filter of the media and the background noise. Trump may be polar opposites to Cook on many issues, but I'd hope he'd at least listen and possibly move closer to his points of view on issues like security vs privacy.
Can you give me one example of an issue where Cook and Trump are polar opposites?

Tim Cook believes in telling the truth.

  • T-Mobile quarterly earnings increase attributed to iPhone 7, promotions

Apple will not be disclosing sales figures in Tuesday's earnings announcement. Last year, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sold through 13 million units in three days of availability.
Source?  I know Apple announced there would be no press release about first weekend sales, but I never heard anything about no discussion at the earnings announcement.
