  • Uber, Twitter among companies giving engineers 'fully loaded' M1 Max MacBook Pro

And, like all of Apple's non-upgradeable machines, buying maxed out is typically better for longevity.

We've been about to upgrade 2012 base Mac minis to large SSDs & 16 GB of RAM to keep them in service for almost a decade.
We've built our 2012 Mac Pro up to running with 128 GB of RAM 48 TB of SSD & 200 TB of fibre over the same time period.

With the newer machines, specifically the laptops, we need to spec them out for the future (and pay the premium for that)
We pay today's costs for higher specs, even though we are buying them for (hopefully) 5 years down the road.

  • Apple's iPod was one of the biggest risks the company ever took

I remember I was there day 1, with $500 in hand (CreditCard).
My local mac store was like, "You think this will be a big thing huh?"  I replied "Huge!"

    Been great all the way!

    Still have mine!
Talk about an intuitive device, i set it up for an 85+ year old to use it during dialysis & she had no problem finding and playing the albums she wanted/

Looking back, the idea of a spinning hard drive in such a device is cringe worthy, but i'd already been using Kodak's DCS series DSLRs with PCMCIA spinning storage, so it seemed appropriate. :)

  • Design failure in Apple's Time Capsule leads to data loss

We still have several tall Airport base stations running as Time Machine "servers"

Wifi off, ethernet only, external USB RAID-5 (stored in the server room)

Oddly, they have been more reliable than Time Machine built into the macOS Server

  • System 7 transformed the Mac on May 13, 1991

Makes me want to pull out my IIcx!

By the time i upgraded machines, it had 128 MB of RAM & a RasterOps video card with maxed out memory.
Photoshop flew, especially when the RAMDisk was working well.

I believe that was also the machine i had my slide printer on.
Yes, turning digital images (typically graphics/text) into 35 mm slides for presentations.
Sounds utterly backwards in 2021 :D

  • Ikea & Sonos AirPlay 2 Symfonisk lamp may be on the way out

I personally have no desire to tie my audio needs to my taste in lamp. Two different use cases. Toaster-fridge.
white noise for the toddlers room!

It is has been a sturdy lamp & "ocean noises" that they can turn on & off themselves (both light & music), and looks decent.

As-is shopping @ Ikea made the price about the same as this.
