  • Zombie BlackBerry phones will finally die off in early 2022

Wait, how is this even possible? Good ole’ 2G phones from back then still work fine in Europe.
Europe is mostly is set on a 2025 shut off for 2G & 3G

Here in the US it is happening more quickly & in a stepped approach (2G mostly deactivated already, 3G going offline in 2022)
Some of it is due to radio spectrum management - we have a lot of "wants", but broadcast spectrum is a finite resource.

Planned obsolescence, forced upgrade paths, etc, etc.
    It all applies.

I think, similar to the OTA television upgrade to ATSC, there should be free/low cost hardware to accommodate the shutdown for people who cannot afford it themselves or are disinclined to pay. 235,000 people in the US applied for & got the "coupons" for a digital/analog converter box so they wouldn't be forced to buy a new television.

  • A prominent orange dot in macOS Monterey is causing problems for artists

If the orange dot truly shows through even when applications are in full scree mode, it is yet another example of poor QA on software releases for Apple.
When i go to full screen, it means i want to be in full control of what is being displayed. Period.

Lectures, presentations, projection installations, medical records, medical imaging.
I don't want to have an element i cannot control.

To go there, it is that type of attention to detail that epitomized Steve Jobs & he pushed his teams to adhere to that level too.

Can anyone test Keynote & see how it behaves in presentation mode?
    Final Cut?
    Quicktime?

Just wonder whether Apple is "using the right API" in their own apps...

  • Netflix cuts video bitrates in Europe due to social distancing demand

I still can't tell the difference between 720p, 1080p, and 4K content from a distance of 10 feet on a 65" TV and I have 20/20 vision. I can tell the difference from a few feet away, but that's too close to be watching a 65" screen.
The human eye does have a limited resolving power.
As with everything "normal" is more akin to average normal, but regarding our viewing into the eye, optics for viewing *into* the eye hit the anatomic limit of resolution decades and decades ago. AO is the working (but expensive) solution to photographing individual rod and cone cells, etc. (Think AO the same as earth bound telescopes looking through the atmosphere to deep space)

  • 'Apple Watch Series 6' may introduce blood oxygen detection, better ECG

Blood oxygen saturation is a good indicator of lung function for suffers of coronavirus. This would be ideal monitor for self isolation.

But another use I see for it is for endurance athletes.   It is widely acknowledged in sports medicine the main criteria for measuring the ability of runners, cyclists and such is VO2Max -- the ability of the body to get Oxygen to the muscles.  And, as an athlete runs his heart rate increases mostly in response to the combined effect of lower blood Oxygen levels and higher blood CO2 levels.   An SpO2 sensor on the watch would enable endurance athletes to monitor 2 of the 3 main criteria of their status (the third is glucose levels)

It is far better to measure muscle oxygenation of the worked muscles with a NIRS system like Moxy. https://www.moxymonitor.com/
The farther away your sensor is from the muscles consuming the oxygen, the less actionable the data is. So a wrist-based sensor isn't useful as a training tool.

Now if Apple incorporated an optical blood lactate meter in the AppleWatch, well that could be beneficial.

  • Update Firefox now, because the Department of Homeland Security is telling you to

Yeah, update now! Because having a "critical security issue that could allow attackers to take control of affected computers" that was previously unreported sounds like a great selling point. Yeesh.

Maybe delete Firefox and switch to a different browser.

What browser do you switch to?
Chrome had a zero-day back in March and another in November
Safari had 2 back in March
    ...
