  • Apple must face sex bias lawsuit from janitorial service, California judge rules

:D You will NEVER make these people happy.

People who identify other people by gender, color, race, etc. will ALWAYS find SOMETHING wrong with whatever you did. Learn that lesson now.

  • Apple Watch may get thinner in the future with curved sensor components

    crowley said:
Bizarre that making things curved is seen as requiring a patent.
My guess is it is to cover themselves when some Android Wear manufacturer (cough Samsung) comes along and duplicates the technology. I'm sure a curved sensor was a goal early on, but for whatever reason they were either unable to mass produced it, or it wasn't up to Apple's snuff collecting the data it was designed to.

This is not a slight on the watch, but with so many issues/features to address in the first few generations, I'm guessing this was pushed to a later release, and they finally figured it out.

  • Apple opens up independent repair shop program to include Macs [u]

It remains to be seen how this program will become useful in the future. Currently it serves no purpose/it makes no difference whether it exists or not, maybe it could be the start of more consumer-friendly repair options sometime in the future. I can see Apple locking up their products with security as an inappropriate excuse (it's not even more secure than 5 years ago) to justify reducing the useful lifespan of a product.

The most important points of independent repair shops (e.g. access to original spare parts at reasonable prices and various chips, flash storage and expansibility options to extend a products useful lifespan and thus not waste resources) remain to be addressed.
Isn’t this exactly what they’re addressing? What’s the issue? Access to purchase, the pricing, what?
Concluding the experience from independent repair shops (like Rossmann Group) it does not make the parts needed to do basic repairs more accessible.  Still only replacing entire part groups for hundreds of dollars even if a simple 2$ component stopped working.
It's the same for cars. They replace the entire board.

As a consumer, I don't want your shoddy, cheap repair attempting to solder in a $2 chip b/c you think you can do it.
What? Do you know what soldering is? If someone can't solder a blown cap or broken keyboard switch, I sure as hell don't want them anywhere near the guts of my computer.

OK, folks, this is where it hits Apple.

This Trump nonsense of sanctions, trade wars, and bravado will make Apple sales tank in China.

And probably, in any other country where TikTok and WeChat is popular.

Now if only Trump has a single proof of illegal behavior on ByteDance, which is funded by (among others) several American firms.

This. I’m not Chinese and have been as big a fan of Apple As anyone. I own most of apples products and paid services such as iCloud and music. Even as I look at some of the newer android phones with some envy I don’t see myself switching because of how invested I’m with apples ecosystem. But if Apple removed WeChat which I use for work (with Chinese and many around the world), I will have to get myself an android phone. And I think that will be the beginning of a move away from Apple.
Android is owned by Google, I am sure Google will be ask to not sign banned apps on its Android software
There is the open source Android (sans GMS).

If this ban were to affect the licenced version of Google in China, it would have a devastating impact on the company as it could lead to Chinese vendors banding together at an OS level. They are already banding together on other levels.
Yes, another undesirable consequence and a very dangerous one. A Chinese OS would be a replacement for China phones first but a few years down the road it could expand into the rest of the world, potentially threaten Apple and even Google.

I never used WeChat but I know how important it is for Chinese guys down there.

Again, a WeChat ban could end horrendously for Apple.

That is exactly what the U.S. tech industry fears -- including and especially Trump's Huawei bans and his moves split the world in two:   China will develop their own tech and the rest of the world will be forced to choose between the U.S. -- which only has dominance in finance at this point -- and China which dominates in pretty much all other ways.

Trump only looks at the how the near term will impact him - mostly the election.   He doesn't care about anything else.

Most real Americans hate to see their democracy being undermined and the country led by a corrupt Conman who governs for his own benefit only.
    Such as?
