  • Apple, Google in a 'standoff' with Germany and France over contact tracing privacy

Weird that on one hand EU has always pushed for stringent PDPA laws to protect privacy yet now contradict themselves to allow centralised storage of data without users’ permission.
The EU bureaucracy pretends to care about its citizens but it's number one priority is protecting and promoting the plan for an EU superstate. Its ambitions wrecked the economies of Southern Europe by allowing them to join the euro, and it provoked the invasion of the Ukraine.

The EU will undoubtedly use such centralised tracking resources to undermine and counter anti-EU political organisations in member states. Today's technology gives it the kind of survellience powers the KGB could only dream of.

Thank goodness democracy prevailed in the UK and we managed to leave.
The same (imperfect) EU that has brought 75 years of peace and prosperity to Europe? Remember that WWII thing caused by a fractured Europe ?  The U.K. has comprehensively shot itself in the foot and damaged itself terribly economically for absurd  xenophobic reasons. Also to point out that  the U.K. has some of the most pervasive monitoring of its populace anywhere...it’s no beacon of privacy.

  • Goldman Sachs sees iPhone sales tanking 36%, says sell AAPL shares

Can anyone say "stock market manipulation". Probably told all his buddies to go out and grab some AAPL while the going is good

  • Mac shipments down 21% year-on-year in global PC market shrink

Our company is a heavy buyer of Dell workstations and laptops. Without exception that are unmitigated pieces of junk that barely last 2 years. The number of failures we have with Dells is tragic and they are just poorly designed built to a price throw away crap. Compared to the amazing longevity of Apple hardware there is no comparison. Just helped a friend replace his perfectly functional 2008 MacBook Pro. My 2014 27” iMac is a joy to use.

  • ARM Mac Pro coming sooner rather than later, says Jean-Louis Gassee

Anyone who works in or develops HPC software cringes at this.  Sure it's likely you can make an ARM chip with the performance of high-end Xeons, but the world of HPC software is a million years away from XCode app development where you can flip a switch to build for a new architecture. There are so many bespoke libraries (e.g. Intel MKL) and years of optimization that have gone into getting HPC code to run fast on AVX Xeons.

Apple is a bit-player in HPC with the Mac Pro because of their 'war' with nVIDIA ( cutting off access to the compute power of their massively parallel GPUs)  - it would just sideline them even more if they went ARM.

  • HomePod gains smart speaker marketshare in Q4, still lags far behind front runners

It’s absurd to compare the sales volume of a high end speaker like the (highly profitable) HomePod to bottom dwellers like the echo. Let’s see the sales comparisons of the high end smart speakers.  We have two HomePods and use them to control lights and music with Siri. It’s amazing how Siri can pick up a command from rooms away, My wife was a skeptic but is totally won over.  The chattering media masses who complain about Siri have no idea- Siri understands what she needs to very effectively now.
