  • Apple should keep Lightning for now, but USB-A has to die

I’ve yet to see a car with a USBC port, but there are already cars with wireless charging built in.

USBA will be around for a very very very long time even if it’s just for cars.

Cars will migrate away from USB to wireless charging just like they’ve moved away from ‘mic’ ports to Bluetooth.

The future is not USBC, it’s wireless for power and thunderbolt for data (because USB 3.2 is still too slow).

  • Apple Pay finally 'coming soon' to Germany

Without the ‘savings banks’ (Sparkasse) this is a bit tokenistic.  Germans don’t really use credit cards, and most Germans use a local savings bank.  I think Apple Pay has a lot to offer Germany in this way - most other easy payment methods are very much tied to MasterCard/EuroCard or Visa - Germans should appreciate the security of Apple Pay and the ability to use your own money, not credit.  But I think Apple haven’t done enough work on communication here.

  • Apple responds to viral tweet over disappearing iTunes movies

I think AppleInsider should have incldued a link to their article on using the "Movies Anywhere service".
    https://appleinsider.com/articles/17/10/20/how-to-transfer-dvd-and-blu-ray-movies-to-itunes-using-vudu-and-movies-anywhere

I frequently move between 4 countries and have iTunes accounts in each and a library of movies, music and apps that spans all 4 accounts.  It's a bit messy - but I'm impressed Apple/iTunes actually manages it - surely 99.9% of users don't use these features, but the facilities are there and work well.

For someone who 'moves permanently' from one region to another though - I can see how that is much more difficult and not really supported.  But the same would have been true if the movie was purchased on DVD.  Here in OZ the disc would have been Region 4, and a 'standard' DVD player in Canada would be locked to Region 1 and wouldn't play the DVD.  So in that sense - iTunes is no different to a DVD.  The differences are:
    1) it's really easy to get an "unlocked" dvd player
    2) worse case scenario you can take your Oz DVD player with you to watch your Aussie films

  • 'iPhone XS' & 'iPhone XC' are the 2018 iPhone lineup names, according to Chinese carrier

TLDR: the only one name anyone cares about is the iPhone SE-X (or iPhone X-SE?).

  • Intel's newly launched 8th-generation processors could power refreshed MacBook and MacBook...

I really don't want to buy new hardware until Meltdown/Spectre etc. are fixed in the microcode.  Looking at other reviews it seems like these new processors have some performance tweaks so the patches run better, but it's minor.  Going OT: I do wonder if that's why the Mac Pro is still so far off - Apple want to wait for silicon that is properly fixed.
