Apple's confidence, acquisitions strategy stand in the way of large takeovers
Given the history of large acquisitions it is probably more useful to show how and when they make sense. The evidence at Google, Microsoft, et al point to most acquisitions being fantasy guesses at the future (almost universally wrong), efforts to get into new markets and business (rarely work and pretty much result in expensive write-offs), vanity projects that bigger is better, or other again almost uniformly bad examples based on arguments of synergy and complementarity.
Most (really almost universally) of the acquisitions and mergers would have better benefited stockholders with buy backs and dividends.
There is a constant drum beat that Apple is not doing enough big acquisitions shows more of a paucity of imagination by analysts to merger buyout reality and utter disregard for history and experience. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it and analysts seem most doomed.
Apple and a few other companies unprecedented cash reserves reflect more on business and tax law as well as inrernational environment constraints and uncertainties. Looking at the foundations of why large cash reserves are so valuable (recall pay very low earnings) and what constrains their application to economic and business development would be a lot more useful and meaningful. -
Apple in talks with Chinese display maker BOE to supply OLED panels for future iPhone
Two points.
1. OLED display technology does NOT provide high quality color or work well in bright lights vs vivid black and white contrast. If used it will be a step back in terms of color quality. This may be ok due to power savings (think watch) or bright contrast preferred images.
2. The $1000 meme has little to no evidence and recalls silly pricing guesses on orig iPads. That is, wrong!!!
These points need improved discussion. OLED come with compromises that need recognition to manage expectations. -
Apple to oppose 'Right to Repair' legislation in Nebraska, report says
Unauthorized repairs would complicate warranty and security for devices. It is unlikely that Apple would warranty or even repair devices serviced outside its system of trained authorized shops. With regards to the battery, Apple's continuing focus on smaller, denser, highly integrated devices with increased functionality repairs will become increasingly difficult and I think dangerous.
Customers will blame Apple when unauthorized repairs compromise performance, security, and/or safety. The Apple brand would suffer with little recourse for Apple.
Compounding the the problem will be reduced resale value of devices that may have been repaired outside Apple channels and the new buyer is unaware.
A better move would be to increase the warranty period from 1 yr plus pay for second to 2 years with pay for the third. This protects consumers while extending value.
