  • Roku update that broke AirPlay & HomeKit has yet to be fixed weeks later

I stopped trying to explain to folks why Fire Stick and Roku devices are dirt cheap.

Beyond the obvious differences in build quality ( you may or may not be surprised at the DOA rate on Roku, and Amazon has an apparent endless supply of “refreshed” Fire Sticks), I know Apple isn’t selling data on what I watch to scores of different marketing operations. That may not matter to some, but it matters to me.

I use a VPN, Ecosia instead of Google, no Facebook/Instagram/LinkedIn, that sort of thing. Being “off the grid” is a fantasy in a normal life, but we can do things to stop the bleeding.

  • Steve Wozniak 'can't tell the difference' between iPhone 12 and iPhone 13

We bought a Honda CR-V Hybrid last December, and found out the only significant difference between 2020 and 2021 models was a $600 price increase (and the adjusted value from being a model year older). Since we were leasing, that mitigated a lot of our concerns about buying the “older” car, and since it was replacing a 2006 CR-V, either model year would be a massive improvement.

Wozniak’s comment is the whining of bored, over-privileged tech nerds. The product category is mature. There Is no reason to buy a new iPhone every year except the money and desire to do so. Otherwise, an owner of an iPhone 12 (like me) may not see a reason to make a change, but someone with a XR, or 8 Plus—or a Galaxy 9 or Pixel—may find an irresistible package.

Just as folks don’t replace their cars annually, phones are now commonly held for 2-5 years. Apple doesn’t have to appeal to the owners of 12s, but instead to the owners of 3+ year old phones. And while Wozniak barely stifles a yawn when he looks at his new 13, the company may well set new global sales figures again this season.

  • On its second anniversary, Apple TV+ is in a good place

I must say I really enjoy Foundation, and also the Morning Show, my favorite series is For all Mankind, though.
Most of the shows really don’t speak to me (yet), except Ted Lasso, of course!
My take on Foundation is they should have released the first 5 episodes at once because it has taken that long to understand the time jumps, locations and plot threads. I think this is sizing up to be a very effective long-term dramatic story in the way it is presented, but the viewer buy-in is at least 4 episodes and 5 would have been better.  Being able to binge 4 or 5 would have helped tremendously.

  • Chinese students sue Apple over not including chargers with iPhones

I have a bunch I can send them. Headphones too. (I think this is one of the reasons Apple stopped including them.)
Exactly right. The amount of electronic waste generated by every company which supplies a 5W brick charger is massive. Most of us tend to use the same brick for different devices, or buy a higher-wattage brick and use none of those which are included with newer purchases.

For $20 one can buy a higher-wattage charger of very good quality, pair it with one of many cables already in-house, and not add to the amount of electronic waste from things we either lose or actively throw away.

  • HomePod 15.1 update brings Apple Music Lossless & Dolby Atmos support

It was there last night. Used it. Grateful for the option when watching Dune, since it means the soundtrack didn’t wake me up when I fell asleep in the dreariest movie of the year. Visually stunning, and nobody to care about.
