Compared: 24-inch M1 iMac vs 21.5-inch and 27-inch Intel iMac

Now an iMac wouldn’t need that much mass, of course. But if you watched the even they showed us clearly what’s in the chin — the logic board, the thermal cooling system, and the 6 speakers. And the size of the chin appears to be the exact size of those speakers and fans. Perhaps they could make it thick and place the fans and the speakers on the back, but there would surely be other compromises. The details of which we don’t know, but I’m certain they prototyped it and have reasons why they kept it this way. There are always compromises. Compromising the iMac itself so you can have extra monitors (that they don’t even sell) lined up....doesn’t seem aligned with Apple’s priorities.
But who knows, I’m sure the machine will continue to evolve. They had a slide showing the iMac’s evolution toward their vision where the machine becomes invisible... I wouldn’t bet against it getting smaller as they develop new engineering techniques to achieve their goals. Clearly that day isn’t yet today. And as you point out, the chin is now sized to accommodate all the internal working parts other than the display panel, allowing a very reduced overall depth. It’s a layout that’s both logical and aesthetically successful. It’s interesting that the iMac has now been distilled down to 4 groups of active parts: logic board/fans, speakers, display panel, and (external) power supply. None of these will be repairable as such, but any could be replaced. We should probably expect that the display is glued to the case, making it tricky to open up, but by no means impossible. Personally I’m pleased about the external power supply. Power supplies can and do fail, plus they generate heat that’s nice to offboard from the enclosure. The power cable presumably now carries low voltage DC rather than AC line voltage, making it practical to incorporate ethernet — a small stroke of genius. -
New Magic Keyboard brings Touch ID to all M1 Macs
ken_k said:How in the world did Apple design a new keyboard and NOT include the inverted-T cursor keys? They got it right on all of the new Macbook models as well as the iPad Smart Keyboard but botched this up? What were they thinking? This keyboard will be a hard pass for me.
If my own cursor keys stopped working, it'd probably be a week before I noticed. -
