  • MagSafe return & better displays in 2021 MacBook Pro backed in new report

    Yeah, not sure about this.

At present, I don't miss having physical function keys, but I also don't use the Touch Bar for much. There's a lot of potential there, but it doesn't seem to have been realised.

MagSafe? Do we know which format it will be? I mean, I kind of like the approach of just plugging in a USB-C charger of the appropriate power, rather than a proprietary connector. Although, if they kept USB-C charging, and added Qi-Based MagSafe, that could be interesting. I'm just not sure it's practical.

  • Apple shows off AirPods Max in new ad spot and design video

Checked the Australian price - A$899. Ouch. I know it's not necessarily expensive for top-end headphones, but well out of my budget. Kind of glad I picked up some AirPods Pro on special at only A$329 - A$70 off RRP, and only A$10 more than non-Pro wireless charging AirPods.

Now if I could just work out which set of tips is the right balance of fitting in my ears and blocking out external sound...

  • Apple service documents suggest new hardware release coming on Dec. 8

    Apple_Bar said:
Apple said new intel macs later this year. So likely they will update the Macbook Pro 16 with 10th-gen intel processor like they did with iMac 27 2020.
    Fingers crossed...oh, wait, I'm broke.

    Never mind.

  • New Patreon project seeks to bring Linux to M1 Macs

But when will someone port Minix?

I thought it odd that Torvalds would be so dismissive of the idea, even with the proprietary GPU situation, I shouldn't have thought it would be that difficult. Insane for one developer, sure, but not ridiculous. And the idea that it's not worth the effort seems to be very anti-engineering to me. People have done more difficult things just for the hell of it before, and we could have predicted someone would port Linux to ASi.

I mean I get that he's trying to take a sideways swipe at Apple over what he sees as a lack of openness, but I think he's grossly underestimated what a bored software engineer will do for kicks.

  • Epic Games brings 'Fortnite' fight with Apple to Australia's courts

It will be interesting to see. Not sure why they thought the Australian courts would be especially favourable. We do have laws against "Channel Forcing" which prevents certain types of exclusivity deals. If you sell a product, you can't force the purchaser to only use specific services. Usually that's taken as being if Telstra sell me a phone outright, they can't force me to only use Telstra network services, I have to be able to switch networks if I so choose.

Does the App Store count as channel forcing? Maybe under a very narrow view. Does it apply to buying in-game items for Fortnite? I don't see how, since I can buy them from a web page, which is not restricted.
