  • The best Thunderbolt 3 docks for your Mac in 2020

I've been looking at docks lately, as I have managed to accumulate enough peripherals for my MBP that I can't actually plug all of them in at the same time, and the thing that bothers me most is how few basic USB (A, C, whatever) ports some of them have. Just on the number of USB ports alone, I'm going to have to get the TS3, which everyone thinks is the best one, anyway.

The other option would be to get a USB hub to plug into the dock, but I was hoping to cut down on the number of things on my desk.

And even though I now find myself with this problem, I still like the flexibility of the 4 TB3 ports. It's very much a first-world problem, and very much a me problem. And one that's easily solved.
I have two TB3 docks daisy chained but the second is a RAID with USB-A and a bunch of other ports.
I've been looking at those, too, but I'd rather hang any large storage either off my Mac mini (pre-TB3), or directly off the network. That does mean they're less useful to provide extra USB etc ports to my MBP.

  • Logitech announces $999 one-cable solution for virtual meetings

All this speculation as to whether it's a $1K dongle or not when you could just click through to the website and see that it's quite a bit more than that. This is an installation for a conference room.
And those things are pricy. We had one that cost on the order of A$100K, and it never worked properly. The lifetime of the whole thing, it was plagued by problems that were fixed with minor patches (mechanical and software), and workarounds until it was replaced by something much more advanced that cost half as much.

Now we have a few dozen of them, all running with sophisticated telephony gear, and many of them with an iPad just to use as the control panel. Still, a $1K device to add on to that wouldn't be out of the question. Presumably it would partially replace some other components.

$999 for a cable and a hub?!!! I might be missing something here...
I'm thinking the same thing. Either I'm missing the point or Logitech is missing a decimal point.

    Likely a typo.

    $9.99

    Or I'm missing something.
It's listed as $999 on Logitech's site. Crazy.

They've lost their damn minds or we're missing something.
I suspect it's just a bit more complicated than a multi-headed cable. The box probably has some new bespoke bits in it driving the price up. No doubt, the price will come down with time, but for now it's going to be priced for industry only. And early adopters in industry at that.

  • Apple Car could embed displays into the windscreen and other windows

I seem to recall a study from years ago showing that HUDs were problematic, even in aircraft, because the pilots/drivers would check the full instrument panel less often.

Of course, you didn't then replicate the full panel on the HUD because that got too busy, and provided actual distraction from the view out the windscreen. The things a HUD is actually useful for, also don't have much use in a car - range finding, targetting, etc.
