Leak: what law enforcement can unlock with the 'Graykey' iPhone hacking tool

Trump doesn't have the constitutional authority to create any law. Maybe you know that, but the way you worded it sounded like he has some degree of law-making authority.
The iPhone gets a lot of security from the fact that the hardware/software architecture is designed to not allow backdoors. If you change the underlying architecture to allow backdoors, then American phones will essentially have backdoors, we will just have to live with the promise that they won't be opened.
We know from experience, that US law allows the government to obtain search warrants without the subject knowing he is being surveilled. We also know that Apple is a US based company and subject to US law. Should Apple be presented with such a warrant they would be obligated to open the backdoor.
Thus, in practice, you can't have backdoors that apply only to non-US phones.
Now whether or not you think that Apple's level of privacy is a good or bad thing, is a different topic. -
Apple's Magic Mouse charging port design has never been a big deal
It's a bad design as it limits functionality. As is pointed out, it's not a big problem for those who use the mouse wirelessly, but it is a problem for those who use it as a wired mouse.
Wired mice are quite useful in scenarios with a KVM switch, or a shared station where someone comes over with their laptop, and plugs into a monitor with keyboard/mouse attached. A wired keyboard/mouse will work with whatever computer is plugged in. Apple automatically pairs their wireless keyboard/mouse when plugged in via USB.Sure, this issue doesn't affect everyone, but it does affect many.
The bottom line is that there is no functional advantage for having the USB port on the bottom, but there are advantages to having it on the back. This is simply an example of Apple choosing aesthetics over functionality. -
Apple's study proves that LLM-based AI models are flawed because they cannot reason
22july2013 said:hexclock said:Of course they can’t reason. It’s not a living mind. It’s the illusion of intelligence.
While the large language models may give the appearance of intelligence, it's not what we normally think of as intelligence.
Suppose I programmed a computer to beg and plead that it not be turned off. Every time someone got close to the power switch, it would randomly play a prerecorded message begging that it doesn't want to die, that it's afraid of being turned off, that it hurts when it is turned off. The computer would give the appearance of fear, but there would be no actual fear. After all, the computer doesn't need to know what any of the recordings are. You could keep the program the same, and replace the recordings with ones begging to be turned off as the computer is miserable with a pain in all the diodes down its left side.

Apple jacking up prices on post-AppleCare iPhone battery replacements
I have an iPhone XS that's still covered under AppleCare. The battery capacity was slowly going down. A little over a year ago, it hit 80%. I brought it into Apple for a warranty battery replacement. They refused, saying it had to be below 80%.It's been a year, and the iPhone still reports exactly 80% capacity. I am not convinced that iOS correctly reports battery capacity, and Apple does not seem to allow third party software to probe the battery and report capacity.Apple says that I am welcome to pay for a battery replacement, but as long as iOS is still reporting 80%, they won't replace it under warranty. -
How Apple's new iPhone & Apple Watch amp up user health monitoring
slow n easy said:I won't be upgrading to AirPods 2 because they don't stay in my ears. Why won't Apple innovate by developing a product that will stay in my ears? I guess I have no choice other than upgrading to the $1,000 Shure earbuds.
