  • Parallels Desktop 18 increasing subscription costs in October

I use VMware Fusion.  Their hypervisor product has done so well for me over the years, along with their fantastic support that I happily paid for every new release.  It's my way of thanking them for such a great product and to help in my own little way to support them.

Something about paying a subscription to use something I already have feels wrong.  I get that a company has to get a more stable cash stream, but to me if they were making great products, the customers would come.  This does not bode well for Parallels.

  • Apple won't call to ask you to tell them a code you get on your iPhone

It's inexcusable in today's world where some scammer can spoof a number.  It should be made impossible to spoof numbers.  Period.  If it's coming from some VOIP network, it should be identified as such.  I'd like to think there is a profit-motive involved as to why the telcos aren't doing more, but I think it's just sheer laziness and the only way it will get fixed is for the government to drop the hammer on their heads with major fines if they don't clean up their acts.

That being said, I get scam calls all the time and for what its worth, in his position I would have just had fun with the scammer and give out bogus 2FA codes.

I'm curious if the Apple-impersonator had that familiar accent that is usually common with scam calls.  Those are usually a huge red-flag for me the moment they open their mouth.

  • AirDropped nudes nearly cancel Cabo flight

It would be great if AirDrop included some metadata so the recipient can determine who sent it.  If that flasher knew their AppleID was being sent along with that nude photo, they would certainly think twice before doing it.

People that do this are truly scum.

  • AirTag catches airport baggage handler stealing luggage

AirTags on my luggage saved me from missing my connecting flight when one of the bags were flown on a different plane and was sitting around in another area of the airport with zero notice from the airline.  My friends saw it in action and they too became AirTag owners after seeing what could happen.

    Thank you Apple.

  • Man jailed for stalking ex-girlfriend with an AirTag

Scumbags using tracking devices to stalk their exes has been going on since the technology was available.  What's different now is that devices like AirTags gives police the ability (with help from Apple) to determine who owns it via their AppleID.

So the reality is that the dumbest thing one can do is use an AirTag for illegal purposes.
What stops someone from buying a burner iPhone and creating a fake AppleID?
Nothing, but it's my guess that's more the exception to the rule.  I've read quite a few articles about how a stalker's AirTag resulted in them being caught and arrested.  Haven't read anything much about unknown tags.  Creating an AppleID usually means they have a credit-card on file as well.

Either way, I'm not too concerned about rogue, burner iPhones with fake AppleID's.  Stalkers are generally too stupid to cover their tracks well.
