  • Apple's new Mac mini finally arrives with 5X performance, Thunderbolt 3, more

Apple ALMOST nailed the Mac Mini. They should have offered one with dual flash SSDs like the iMac Pro and a maybe a SATA bus for 2nd large SATA SSD. An i9 would have been nice.

However, 64GBs RAM, 2TB flash, 6-Core i7 and the T2, (love all that!), if it’s not $2500 for the high end model I’ll buy a pair. And please, no more soldering parts Apple please. I’m still using modified 2009 Mac Pros for a reason.

    We’ll see.
SATA is obsolete.  TB3 is where it's all at.  Besides, you can get a TB3-Sata adapter (usually via a dock) if you must use those old drives.  I'm surprised they still put legacy USB ports in there.

This is a solid machine.  I'm may seriously consider one of these for the office but will wait to see what the new iMacs look like first.

  • Silicon Valley's product strategy won't work with health care, says Apple veteran

I take exception to her comparison to Theranos. They had one product she gambled on and when she discovered it wasn’t working she acted like it was. That is fraud, something Apple had never done (to the same extent). She should know that because Apple hasn’t released much of any medical related product, especially under her control. If they did she’d be compared to Elizabeth Holmes, which nobody is claiming.
The caution in the industry caused by the implosion of Theranos and the outing of Elizabeth Holmes as a fraud was I think a necessity.  People were claiming the next big thing and essentially throwing a smoke-screen at the faces of investors.  I'm actually glad that now everyone has to basically prove that they're not producing some kind of vaporware and pretend it's real.

I just started reading "Bad Blood", a book about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.  I'm only in a few chapters, and even then I'm stunned at the fraud she was already doing at the beginning.  She did a demo which didn't work, but on the monitor were pre-recorded results from an entirely different test.  She lied about it and when confronted about it by her then first CFO (Henry Mosley), she fired him on the spot for not being a "team player".  Disgusting.  She has serious issues.

  • Apparent iOS 12 beta bug causes never-ending notifications to update software

Are people here in the beta program that have nothing to do with actually testing it?

It’s “Beta”.  The “B” might as well stand for “Bugs”.  Why is this even being reported on?  Slow day?

  • Review: Alto brings Italian leather to Apple Watch bands

I wonder what's so special about Italian cows that makes their leather so marketable.
    I can help there!

So! Italian leather is mainly preferred because of its history. There is a long history of leather products coming from Italy and are often used in the fashion industry. Vegetable tanning was invented in Tuscany before spreading around the world. In these tanneries, they will place the raw hides in wood drums for up to three months with vegetable tannins. This helps built insoluble protein complexes to help increase durability. It even gives Italian leather a distinct smell.

This watch band is made from full grain leather, which is one of the best available. It is the most resistant and strongest, made from the top layer of the hide without being sanded or buffed. This keeps makes all bands unique with individual imperfections and nuances. When these imperfections show through, only the best leather can be used or it would look terrible.

TL/DR: Italian tanneries have been around a long time and have a history of some of the best leather in the world.
Well... that's just part of it.

The cows over there are treated much better than here in the US.  Most obvious is that the Italians (and the EU in general) don't use barbed-wire to contain the cows in an area.  Regular wood fencing and most times just free-roaming.  Barbed-wire tends to cause undesirable marks, scrapes, tears in the skin that show up when the time comes to process the hides.

  • Nikon launches full-frame mirrorless cameras with wireless iPhone & Mac support

Nikon will make lots of money because they chose to support Apple. Apple customers are loyal.
The lack of a 2nd card slot has me brushing off this camera.  I couldn’t care less about the Apple interface.

this is an enthusiast-only camera.  Most pros will (should?) shun it.
