  • Apple smart ring could use U1 chip to detect when wearer points at devices

I can see the Apple nerd wedding now.... With this ring, I thee wed... until software upgrades are no longer available.

  • HomePod software now based on tvOS instead of iOS, report claims

They should add a mesh router.
That would be cool. I also saw a suggestion somewhere that it could also be turned into the new Apple TV with a HDMI output. With the latest processor it could be a speaker, a mesh router, an AppleTV, a gaming console. Hmm... Just like the introduction of the iPhone... A speaker, a mesh router, an AppleTV, a gaming console.... That said, considering they laid off their router design staff, I don't see that happening. But it would be fun.

  • Apple challenges VoIP-Pal's latest patent suit, claims asserted IP is invalid

The key phrase here is: [Further, the IP fails to recite an inventive concept, Apple says, as they "recite generic computer components [ ] that the specification admits were not invented by VoIP-Pal and that operate in their expected manner."] Let's hope we see this more and more as time goes on. I frequently read these Patents declarations and see them as vague enough that they state nothing. I'm not sure if they state them this way in order to hide their real process, allow them to be used as "Gotcha devices" as they frequently are or are written purposely by non-engineers.
I agree, but note that attorneys rewrite the patent submission as broadly as possible so as to broaden the scope of the patent. However, this one describes how networks already already worked and therefore there is nothing novel about the patent. Like patenting a number pad on a phone so you can readily access a specific user by dialing their unique numeric identifier and showing the caller’s unique identifier so the call receiver can decide wether to answer or not.

  • Apple's sleep and health tracking ambitions extend to blankets and mattresses

I wonder if something like this could be used for alerting someone to sleep apnea.  Or even somehow communicating with a CPAP.

Having gone for a sleep test, it is harrowing if you don't sleep the way they want you to with all those things hooked up to your head.
I could not sleep on my back the way I was told I had to and spent the whole night pretty much awake.  Results inconclusive.
I could see this helping in having better sleep studies at home. Instead of going to a sleep center, you take a set of 'electrode' sheets home, put them on your mattress and complete the sleep study in the environment you are accustomed to for more accurate results. No wire mesh on your body and a blood oxygen sensor on your Apple Watch. Then if you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, you get a prescription for the sheets which, along with your Apple Watch can adjust the settings on your CPAP as needed. I know several people who have apnea and this might be the ticket to fine tune their CPAPs.

  • VoIP-Pal targets Apple's FaceTime, iMessage in renewed patent infringement battle

"Developed by Digifonica and protected in 2019 as U.S. Patent No. 10,218,606..." so it was patented long after FaceTime was released?

It was first filed in early 2018. Yes, I do believe this one is going to be fun. Fun for Apple.
Ok, 2018 but FaceTime was released years before that and it automatically distinguished between out of network vs in network messages from the initial release which is what it seems this patent is all about.
