  • Apple launches new Pride music page celebrating LGBTQ+ artists

I like Classical music, asked Apple Music not to suggest Pop, Rap, Hip Hop, Country, etc., and apparently it takes that to mean that I *really* want to see those when I browse, particularly Rap.  I don't need to see their curated political cause-of-the-month stuff either - is there any way to not get this other content pushed constantly other than unsubscribing?

  • US official calls Cook's idea to vote on iPhone 'preposterous'

You can buy a gun online. Why not vote too.
Have you ever actually  tried buying one?  Then it ships to a FFL who runs your background check through the FBI system before you get to take possession, but sure, you're free to pay and have it shipped without ID, lose your deposit & maybe get arrested if you lie on the paperwork*.  *(Unless you're in the US illegally - Biden rescinded the EO that had illegals trying to acquire guns be turned over to ICE.)

Now for something unimportant like voting, registering ineligible individuals at DMVs is good enough, mail-in ballots without even signature validation are good enough, seems like phoning it in should also be good enough.

  • MacBook Butterfly keyboard lawsuit granted class-action status

    techconc said:
I have a late 2016 15" MacBook Pro.  It's used heavily every day by several family members which includes teenage kids.   According to the tech press, I guess my keyboard should have blown up a long time ago.  Yet, I've never had a single problem with it.  Mind you, I'm not crazy about the lack of travel on the butterfly keyboards, but I've not had any reliability problems.  I guess I'm the lucky one??
I had a 2017 MBP 15. The right arrow key stopped working about 3 months after I got it.  The keyboard was swapped out, it ended up frying the power controller chip soon after that - not sure if it was related to the first repair or not.  They ended up replacing it with a 2018 MBP, which is still working - for my son.  I bought a MBP 16 because I didn't trust the butterfly keyboard, particularly after buying a 2017 MB 12 for my daughter and having the letter 'C' not work right out of the box (also repaired under warranty),  I know of other butterfly keyboard issues at my small company - roughly half of the affected machines.

So... in my experience I'd say it was a coin toss in terms of your luck, but who knows what the real numbers were.  (Maybe we'll find out with this lawsuit.)

  • Google Fi expanding VPN service from Android to iPhone

Running all net traffic through a Google product is increasing security? Out of the pan and into the fire!
No doubt. Aside from using the FaceBook VPN that got banned, I can't imagine a less appealing way of giving up all of my personal information.

Unbelievable, happens to the best of them I suppose. Wouldn’t it have been cheaper and safer to just get a permit???
They weren't trying to avoid the fees. California is a "may issue" state. The legislature left it up to the local Sheriff or Chief of Police to decide who does or doesn't get one. The majority of Californians are denied this basic right that the majority of the rest of the country enjoy.

When I had mine, I paid nearly $500 (to cover the 16-hour class, range time, and the permit fees). I paid $250 every other year to renew. In WA state, I paid $50 for a 5-year permit. And unless you have a criminal record, you cannot be denied a permit.

Wow, for us Europeans it's very difficult to understand the mindset that sees carrying a concealed weapon a 'basic right'!  You certainly live in a different world to us! So happy not to be in that world.
We are equally happy you are not in our world. We prefer freedom over the illusion of safety.
"So glad my government decides what my rights are!" - Europeans?

Totally agree, tylersdad. The US was founded on the overthrow of tyranny, and the goal was to guarantee the rights of its citizens vs. allowing bureaucrats to define what they are.  Celebrating your own lack of rights (or marching to have them removed) comes off as a naive when you look at how governments have behaved throughout history.
