  • Apple has decided against making its own microLED Apple Watch displays

MicroLED really sounds fantastic - all of the contrast, more brightness, and no burn-in issues that OLEDs have, and bringing some of that production back to the US would have been a bonus to boot.  Of course producing it in a plant that doesn't need suicide netting would cost more - or maybe they feared random power cuts + higher taxes and wages. Santa Clara probably isn't the place to move manufacturing in the U.S. if you want to be competitive.

  • Apple will crush the DoJ in court if Garland sticks with outdated arguments

quote: “Let's start simply, by looking at Attorney General Merrick Garland's…”

The big question about this trial is… What is AG Garland going to earn?
No the case in itself… but… Will he get a judicisry promotion? A political stance?

Everything else are… just details to get there. A big win over the biggest company… What a promotion!
Anything from political points for career ambitions (I'm sure he'd still love a Supreme Court seat) to more (unconstitutional) cooperation deplatforming content the government says is 'harmful' to maybe a whispered 'this could go away if you open a few back doors for us'.  Snowden revealed massive illegal spying by our government - he's now in exile in Russia while the people who ran the illegal programs sit on the MSM news programs telling us about what a threat to democracy everyone else is.  Crazy times.

(OTOH, maybe they'll drop the case if Tim starts talking about how he was just talking to Mitterand recently?)

True on sustained performance, but the odd thing is that there's been almost no weight difference ("Air"?) for years when it was 2.8lbs vs 3lbs. Apparently the solution was to make the Pro start at 14" and 3.5 lbs, I'd still love to see a true Air show up at the 2 lb mark again. ߤ禺wj;♂️
Thank you for pointing out that the Air stopped being "airy" long ago, with almost no weight difference vs MBP until the latest MBPs put on weight.

Sadly, the second iteration of a "true Air" has come and gone: it was the Macbook 12" Retina. 2 pounds of pure joy. Not only was it my primary work computer for five years, but it was the choice of pretty much every top level exec at the top ten cable channel where I was employed. Sure, our video editors weren't using it, but the idea that you couldn't get "real work done" on the MBA 12" was just ridiculous. My current MBA M2 feels unwieldy and like an anchor compared to the super compact and lightweight MB 12" Retina. I keep hoping they resurrect it with Apple Silicon, but I doubt that will happen.
Yes, the 11” Air was fantastic, and the MacBook 12” was the ultimate expression of that form factor - a laptop you could take along without having think about the size and weight and with a great screen and enough power to get real work done.  Bliss for portable function.

I used Xcode and did some 3D modeling on it (and had a Mac Pro at my desk for the heavy lifting) - and that 12” form factor with Apple Silicon would give more power than the older Mac Pro towers in a 2lb package - good enough for almost anyone on the road.

    I keep hoping too.

(Edit to add: I think people who didn’t have one of the lightweight machines may think it’s not that much of a difference.  The 11” Air was the first machine that made me think “this is what a laptop was meant to be!” Transformative.)

There is hardly any difference between the MacBook Pro and Air since Apple silicon. One has a fan and the other doesn't. All other differences are purely down to marketing and deliberate product placement. Improved heat sinking would remove the need for a fan, the display could be made premium and suddenly there is no need for two product lines. Ive was right.
The lack of a fan affects the weight, internal space usage (i.e.: overall size), power usage, and speaks to the performance allowable. An improved heat sink will improve that but I'll need hard numbers showing cost and benefit to know if that's both worth it or even feasible with a maxed out MacBook Pro.

  • AirTag-equipped SUV gets stolen and tracked across the planet

I'll share my recent AirTag theft recovery experience. Maybe this helps those in a similar bind.

I had some holiday decorations stolen from my yard recently. I knew it was going to happen because people were stealing things from yards in the area over the last year. So I put an AirTag in one of my decorations.

Sure enough one morning I woke up and had all of my decorations gone. It was about 50 miles away in a neighboring town. I called the local police and told them I had items stolen and tracked it to someone's place. They asked if the items were stolen in the town I tracked them to. I said no. Dispatch said only after I had a police report from my local PD could they help out and send a unit over.

Went to my local PD, handed over evidence (three angles of the perp from my cameras) and my statement. 30 minutes later I had a police report number. I drove over to the place my AirTag was last seen. It was an apartment complex. I drove around and saw my decorations in front of their place. I called that local PD, explained what was going on and that I tracked my property to a location and had the police report from my local PD. They sent a unit out. I explained to the officers what was going on, handed them a print out of my AirTag location and picture of the perp. Went to the apartment with the police. While standing back they talked to the apartment resident (wasn't the perp). They explained what was going on and asked about the decorations. The woman in the apartment said she didn't know who put those decorations there. The police then asked if the owner (me) could take their property back? She said yes. So I scooped up my yard decorations without incident.

On the way out of the complex the officer said, "those AirTags are a big timesaver for us." We were all happy the outcome went smooth.
I know someone who just had their car broken into and items stolen, including a pair of AirPods.  Those let the owner track them to a house - they called the police, told them the situation, and - much like these useless Canadian cops - they told them they could only retrieve the property if they had enough cause to get a warrant, and so wouldn't do anything. (Total theft was likely over any dollar limit where they'd in theory just ignore it - it included jewelry.)

Ironically this is in a town where they're giving AirTags to people to track stolen cars.  🤦‍♂️
