  • Google Bard: Adequate, but Microsoft Bing blows it away

I far prefer using ChatGPT directly to using Bing's adaptation.  Vastly superior at interaction.  Heck, you can argue with ChatGPT, and it doesn't get offended; Bing has told me it doesn't like the conversation and is terminating it!  This was when questioning why it made massive errors in some simple science.
Yes, Microsoft don't want people arguing (or conversing, really) with Bing - they just want people to use it for search. They restrict the number of Bing responses per "conversation" to 20, and it will abruptly end the conversation if it doesn't seem to be about searching for information.

For example, I asked it if it was based on ChatGPT 3 or ChatGPT 4, and it said (paraphrasing but only slightly): "neither; I am a language model developed by Microsoft and I'm not based on ChatGPT". I responded with "according to what I've read, I don't think that's correct", at which point it terminated the conversation with "sorry, I don't want to talk about this any more".

  • Amazon in talks to purchase fitness equipment producer Peloton

Amazon is now just like the Buy N Large company from the movie Wall-E. The difference here is Elon Musk’s space ships will take us off the planet.
I'm ok with this as long as Bezos, Musk, and No 45 are all on board for the first one-way journey to Mars.
That way, they can escape paying any tax for good.
I guess you missed the part where Musk is paying $11 billion in tax?

  • Apple debuts 14-inch MacBook Pro with HDMI, MagSafe, and a notch

The camera shouldn't be thought of as a notch out of the useable screen, it should be thought of as apple giving more pixels to use either side of the camera, if you want.
That was exactly my first thought. I don't hide my menu bar so there's no screen loss for me, just a smaller laptop altogether, about 5mm less bezel on top.
Having checked the pixel ratios of the screens, it appears that what I said is indeed the case - the screen area either side of the camera is an additional 74 pixels in height, beyond the usual 16:10 ratio of a MacBook Pro screen. The 16" screen is 3456 x 2234 pixels, whereas a 16:10 ratio would be 3456 x 2160.

I don’t want to be overly dramatic about the notch, but even with it in the menu bar, I still think it will be distracting.
There are photos/renderings on Apple's website that seem to imply that you can set the screen resolution so that there is effectively no notch - i.e. it's not notched out of the menubar, it's that the pixels either side of the camera are just turned off and not used.

The camera shouldn't be thought of as a notch out of the useable screen, it should be thought of as apple giving more pixels to use either side of the camera, if you want.

  • iPhone gets USB-C thanks to creative robotics engineer

    • Cost to add higher speed communication to the iPhone.  If a USB-C iPhone continues to use USB 2.0 data rates, that eliminates much of the technical advantage.
There is no cost to implement higher data rates; A-series chips already support higher speeds, as evidenced by iPads with USB-C. Higher transfer rate is a necessity to make ProRes video on iPhone practically useable. As it is, it takes hours to transfer the footage, so who is actually going to use this feature? Wireless data transfer won't cut it.

    • Other Lightening capabilities ... a Lightening headphone adapter only has to (as far as I know) identify itself as such (via the ID chip) and then connect the analog I/O pins to the connector
This is not correct. The Lightning headphone adaptor communicates with the iPhone digitally and incorporates a DAC with headphone amplifier - https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Lightning+to+Headphone+Jack+Adapter+Teardown/67562
